Hudnut earns men’s basketball rookie honor
Contact:William SodomaDate: November 23, 2012 WATERVILLE, Maine — Colby College’s Chris Hudnut (Chevy Chase, Md.) took one week to earn his first honor after being named the Maine Men’s Basketball Coaches and Writers Association Rookie of the Week for the week ending Nov. 18. Hudnut made the all-tournament team at the Babson College Invitational, despite playing limited minutes while coming back from an injury. He averaged 15 points and 4.5 rebounds per contest in a 74-61 win against Wentworth Institute of Technology and a 60-54 setback to Babson. In three games for the Mules, Hudnut is averaging a team-best 11.7 points in just 18 minutes of action. He is part of a first-year class that is making quick strides, with four of the top five scorers on the team in their first year at Colby. Colby (1-2 overall) will host the Colby Classic on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 30 and Dec. 1. The Mules’ home opener will be against Fisher College in the tourney at 5:30 p.m. Friday |

ALUMNI HOCKEY GAME
The Landon Hockey team has a tradition of excellence—Saturday’s match between the White and Orange teams was populated by some of the alumni who created that history. The senior citizen was Chris Cox’95; the classes with the most players were ’96, ’00 and’03 with 3 each. The stands at the Bears’ Den were filled with parents, wives, kids (GO Daddy cheers were heard), girlfriends, two coach and fans.
The rink was filled by superb play, passing (like Coach Farnstrom taught them), shooting, good positional play and goalies who played like Stonewalls (most of the time). What was truly remarkable was the level of play; with one exception, no one had the opportunity to play much hockey in preparation for this game (local adult leagues are about to start). In spite of that rustiness, the overall quality of the competition was quite good.
The high quality of today’s competition with ZERO practice is certainly good evidence that, when they were playing for the Bears, they must have played at a very high level! It is also worth noting that few of these talented scholastic hockey players went on to play that sport for college teams, but true to their athletic ability, many chose to play other sports at Division I programs and to do so at an all-star or better level for their college teams.
The Orange Team, which was captained by Ricky Sears, tallied 9 goals; while the White Team, with Mike Potolicchio, had 7. The bench coaches were Bob Shue for the Orange and Graham Shue, ’13 (this year’s Varsity Captain) for the White. Ten Orange jerseys were tallied with a goal or assist and Blake Shue led with the most points with 3 assists. The leader in points for the game was White’s Jake Samperton with 2 goals/3 assists/5 points. Those with 2 goals included Christian Sears, Michael Cox and Brian Adams. The net minders were Brigham Kiplinger for the Orangemen and Tyler Nichols for the White jerseys.
