Second Sunday Edition of BEARSPORTSNEWS

Away from my home computer, it is hard to produce BSN in its full glory. This edition really is the work of 2 superb correspondent – Coach Reed regular, excellent post soccer match and Father Bear Steve Best.

Here are their reports:

From: Bill Reed Subject: Landon 3 v Georgetown Prep 0

Good, emotional, team-oriented win yesterday on Prindle Field.  The Georgetown Prep group is fast, athletic and energetic.  We knew how they would play but were still back on our heels for the first twenty minutes or so.  Once we settled in, we used the used the wet surface to our advantage and moved it quickly around the field.  Art Keys opened things up for us in the 36:00 when he picked up a partially cleared ball outside the penalty box and hammered a side volley through the crowd.  Dramatic finish.  We were much better in the second half and created more pressure on them and more chances.  Conrad Brady pounced on a mistake outside Prep’s penalty box in the 62:00, 2 – 0, and we could breathe a little bit.  Jackson Tewksbury put the game away two minutes later after running onto the end of a ball that Nico Schermer cleared 60+ yards up the field and went in alone, 3 – 0.  GK Andreas Geffert is now well over 500 consecutive minutes of shutout soccer, a remarkable feat.  Schermer and Tom Trowern had their best games of the season thus far.  Brady, Moses Fishman, Amos Steinglass and Dylan Thiess, back from an injury, excelled.

The upcoming religious holiday next week pulls our next game back to Monday, when we travel to a surging Bullis for a 6:30 game under the lights.  Wish us luck.

Bears Football 7 Haverford 44

On a relatively dank October day and with the remnants of Hurricane Ian threatening, the Landon Bears sojourned to Main Line Philadelphia to take on the Haverford Fords.

What exactly is a Ford? Indeed I had to look it up!

Google states-

“ In the mid-1990s, the college actually made a decision: the official nickname would remain “Fords,” Haverford would adopt a mascot in the form of a Black Squirrel (and had a costume made up which, however, resembled a chipmunk) and teams would be free among themselves on campus to call themselves whatever they wanted, …”

So the black Squirrels or Chipmucks took the field to the sounding of a cannon. I understand the Cannon and Philadelphia but for the life of me I can’t figure out the pairing of a cannon with a squirrel or chipmunk.

Before the game, I walked to the visiting stands past what I thought was a set of collegiate linemen. Indeed, Haverford college is down the street and the high school is connected with the college as they too are named the Fords.

There is an even chance that the high school’s offensive line was on loan from the college. On average, and I do not say this in jest, the lineman outweighed Landon’s defensive line by 80-100 pounds.

And yet, completely physically mismatched, the Landon Bears took the field and never once gave up. The result does not reflect the heart this team gave today. Indeed, while trailing by over 25 and backed up defending their own 4 yard line, the defense could have surrendered a short touchdown run. Instead, Landon stuffed the oversized squirrels not once but twice and refused to yield points. It was an amazing point of pride for this team!

Nate Ferguson connected with Taylor Best on 6 catches for 145 yards including a beautiful 88 years pitch and catch where Taylor outran every squirrel on the field!

Be proud of the boys today! There were what appeared 80 dressed players for Haverford. Because of SATs and injuries, Landon dressed less than 30 boys. They were resilient, they played with pride and never once quit. They are bruised and exhausted and they deserve our accolades and unqualified support.

A uniform message was heard after the game- they are still undefeated in the IAC, start the real season in two weeks and will not once more this season face such a physical disparity. They saw the toughest team they will face this season and never flinched.

All Hail Bears!!!
