PREVIEW OF LANDON v. McDONOGH [10/2 home 1PM]SENIOR PROFILE & BEAR TRACKS

Sep 29, 2010
4 min read

McDonogh Schoolof Owings Mill, MD (orange and black Eagles) has a number of well know alumni/ae. A quick google search produces names like former US Sen. Joe Tydings, former US Ambassador to the UN John Bolton,Pam Shriver (exceptional tennis player and part owner of the Baltimore Orioles, ex Hoya Dajuan Summers of the Detroit Pistons, and former Terp, Darrius Heyward-Bey of the Oakland Raiders.

Try the same search in the Baltimore Sun, Max Preps.com, SportsPower.com or the other HS sports internet sources of information and there is a paucity of information—no roster, only two players’ college recruiting pages(Haki Dennis, a 5’7” DB and Allen Jackson, Junior TE/DE, 6’5”), no 40 yard times,  no jersey numbers, player heights or weights. The simple search does show that the Eagles are good:

  • They beat WCAC  Gonzaga (3-1), 34-20 in both team’s opener,

Haverford of Philadelphia, PA (0-3)felt the Eagles’ talons in a 48-21 loss,

  • Penn Charter(1-2), also of the InterAc League, did not fare well against the Maryland School, 7-37, and

  • Woodberry Forest (2-1), the Bears’ opponent on 10/9, was in hospitably treated by the home team, 35-7.

SportsPower.com ranks the team #8 in Maryland and the Baltimore Sun spots them as #10 in Charm City.

More research reveals names like Jabari Weems (who caught a lateral pass and then threw a 55 yard pass too), Denzel Walker, Miles Crump, Allen Jackson and Haki Denis, but little else about them.

Sorting through a number of articles, one name comes to the fore—Joel Jorgensen, a 6-3, 180# junior quarterback.  For the past three years, the Eagles were led by Rudy Johnson, now on the University of Buffalo team. In his first start, he faced the Gonzaga QB, Kevin Hagen (who is heading to Stanford) and bested him by throwing 4 TD’s against the Purple Eagles in the I-95 Classic.  Against the ‘Fords he had 3 running TDs and 3 passing. The local press in Philly dubbed Joel “Air Jorgensen” and his coach said that his junior signal caller has a “strong athletic IQ”.

The Quakers of PC saw him score 2 TDs on the ground and 1 through the air. There are no accounts of the Woodberry Forest game so his track record against the Orange, VA team is unknown.  On Saturday, the Bears fast, deep secondary and defense will be tested; the home team’s running attack will keep the ball away from the Eagles!!!

Go Bears!!!

(a) the content is mine, does not reflect the opinion of Landon, Coach Padalino or anyone directly related to Landon, (b) that any errors that may exist are mine, inadvertent and correctable (please let me know and I will make ALL corrections) ;(c) that the author (me) is a huge disciple of the Landon team concept and that I will do everything that I can do to mention all the players; however, universal coverage is not really possible through this medium. If someone believes that a player or group (offense/defense; linemen/backs/ LBs/DB/Ss/P, etc.) should receive greater attention, I am open to such suggestions. I will not mention referees at any time and will limit references to the opposition.(d) that BSN is a volunteer publication and that as the editor, publisher, statistician and writer [me], I am all too fallible and I apologize in advance for any error.
