Gagarin Is Golf Tournament Official
Vice Chair of Scoring for U.S. Open
The world’s best golfers are gathering at Congressional Country Club for the U.S. Open starting June 13, and Russ Gagarin ’77,math teacher and director of enrollment and financial aid, will keep track of them all. As Vice Chair of Scoring for the Open, he is responsible for fourcommittees – walking scorers, standard bearers, scoreboards and leaderboards – and approximately 400 volunteers, overseeing and verifying how the golfers’ results are displayed around the course.
The role evolved for Gagarin from work started in 200l as a member of the committee who worked with the USGA in returning the NationalChampionship to the Washington area.
In addition to his role at the USGA event, Gagarin has been a long-time Board member and is currently President of the Maryland State Golf Association. Over the years, he served that organization as a rules official for its championships. He has also been the Officer-in-Charge for the MSGA Father-Son tournament, the Junior (Boys) Amateur Championship a couple of times, the Amateur Public Links Championship (the state championship for public course golfers only), the Mid-Amateur Championship (for men older than 25), the Pro-Amateur Championship, the Maryland Open (one of two professional events with a then $40,000 purse, now $45,000, open to amateurs as well as professionals who reside in MD or are members of the Middle Atlantic Section of the PGA of America), and last year, in charge of the Maryland Amateur at Congressional.
When he is not officiating, organizing or overseeing events, Gagarin likes to get in a few golf rounds of his own.

Frequent timekeeper at Triplett Field honored
Wood Is Honored for Food Bank Work
One of Eight Sodexo “Heroes of Everyday Life”
Landon School’s general manager of food services, Charmion Wood, is one of eight Sodexo employees nationwide to be named a 2011 Hero of Everyday Life. Wood and the other heroes were honored at the 12th annual Sodexo Foundation Dinner on June 9.
Wood oversees all of Landon’s food operations, running the cafeteria in the Lindner Dining Hall, as well as providing catering and refreshments for special events. She also teaches in Landon’s diversity training program.
She makes time outside Landon to serve the broader community. Since 2004, Wood has been an integral part of the Capital Area Food Bank’s volunteer team. Wood serves as a chef instructor for 12 Cooking Matters courses that bring cooking skills and nutrition information to low-income populations that are at risk of going hungry. To date, she has volunteered for a total of 12 courses — 288 hours in all.
Not only does Wood volunteer at the food bank throughout the year, but she also gives back when she’s back home in Utah on vacation. Since 1995, she has spent two days each year volunteering at the Salt Lake City homeless shelter during their Christmas Holiday Radiothon.
