Thoughts on the 2013 Season
The Bears’ schedule was daunting; of the nine teams that they faced, eight had rosters of much larger players. That characterization is not likely to change in the future, particularly with the historic Bullis and Prep size advantage and now with heavier players at Episcopal and SSSA. The Bears counter that opponent asset with speed in the O and D backfields as well as athletic linemen/linebackers. The wing T is a great offensive scheme to maximize those positive Bear attributes. Equally, the Bear D relies on an aggressive style which attacks the opponents and uses smarts and speed to defend.
In retrospect, the Bears played well against all of their opponents. All but one of the scores makes it clear how close Landon was to wins in each of their losses. The one game in which the score was not really indicative, Landon was able to restrain their opponent in all but three plays. The MIAA competition was tough; St. Paul’s won its division and the Bears held BL to one of its lowest point totals. Woodberry Forrest lost one game. No other IAC came as close to beating EHS, except Bullis. The Bulldogs from Potomac placed 14 players on the All IAC team.
What could have happened if Landon could have played at full strength—several returning starters (including at least two 2012 All IAC players) were unable to play due to injuries, my informal tallies counted as many as 14 players on the sidelines because they were unable to play and over the course of the season, Coach Padalino inventoried that the injuries totaled 100 game day absences due to injury. THAT’S QUITE A DEFICIT and in spite of that the team did not ever give up.
What about the future? The Bears lose 18 seniors and it will be hard to replace their leadership, energy and talent. Unfortunately, as noted above, the athletic trainers kept several of them off the field all of the season and others for more than a few game. One returning starter was injured in the preseason and come back to suit up for the last few games in a different position. The good news from those absent seniors was that underclassmen had to and did step up.
The offensive line was composed of 5 members of the Class of ’15 and two from ’16. With a wing T, their ability to synchronize their movements and time their blocks allow them to chop down larger opponents; a year of experience will add to their effectiveness for the 2014 season. The running backs with one stellar exception will be back and one of these boys was selected as all IAC. That’s an excellent foundation on which to build.
The defense loses some talent, but again some of the injuries gave more opportunity for ’15 and ’16 players to step up. Also two of the All IAC players on defense will be returning. The play of the boys who are returning with so much experience create much optimism.
