Landon names Baseball and Rugby Coaches
New Head Coaches for Baseball, Rugby
Bednar, Martin Bring New Perspectives to Game
Two Landon Bears varsity teams are starting the spring season with new leadership. Fourth grade teacher
Randy Bednar takes over as baseball head coach, and Middle School Chinese teacher
Brittany Martin is the varsity rugby head coach.
Bednar has been involved with Landon’s baseball program for four years at the junior varsity and varsity levels. He also played baseball growing up in high school and college, and continued playing in a competitive softball league as a young adult. “I love baseball because it imitates life. It is a sport that has a lot of failure inherent in it,” says Bednar. “It teaches you how to deal with the disappointments in life.”
He looks forward to the season with the strong senior leadership and level of talent on the team as a whole. Bednar insists he is “old school” with the game, wanting the boys to hustle and be prepared to play the game at their best, which hopefully leads to a win. His main goal is to “educate players and prepare them for successes in life.”
Martin is in her first full year at Landon; last year she started working with the rugby team when she arrived in the spring. She discovered rugby in college and continues playing as a center for the Washington, DC Furies, in the women’s premier league (which is the highest level of women’s rugby play except for the US national team).
The rules of men’s and women’s rugby are exactly the same, Martin says. She looks forward to helping strengthen the foundation of the Landon program and spread awareness of the sport. “The spirit and culture of rugby attracts a variety of players and requires diversity of builds, which creates an eclectic and interesting team,” says Martin.
