LANDON LAX 8 @ BULLIS 5, KB AWARD, Senior Profiles, BLTF and the Bears Baseball win vs. Bullis

Bullis beat Prep, it was senior night, it was a March (not almost May), the Bulldogs had scored an average of +10 ppg and the home team seniors included some big time recruits and even the WaPo touted them in an article this week. They took the lead at 1-0, but that was their last lead. The Bullis EMO was 0 for 7 and their offense was shut out for 20 minutes (from 2:09 or the 2nd Q until 6:33 of the 4th). The Bears depth, which was a deciding factor against Gonzaga in the heat of Buchanan Field, again ground down their opposition. Bears 8 Bulldogs 3.

Maybe it was the Bears’ Orange jerseys? The Bears wore new VERY ORANGE jerseys (a favorite color)

Scott Crow (RPI recruit) scored the Bullis first goal off an assist from Brandon Ashenbach at 8:43. Both teams evidenced the kind of sloppiness that is characteristic of a cold night and a big game.

END OF 1ST Q BULLIS 1 LANDON 0

Peter Laco put the Bears on the board off of an assist from Patrick Keena at 8:15. Charlie Schnider, on an EMO play, then put the visitors ahead on a nice assist from Patrick again, at 3:25. Nick Fisher scored for Bullis at 2:09. Both goalies Ryan McMahon (OWU recruit and Tommy Minkler’s future roommate there) and Alex Joyce (future BIG Hoya) were major reasons why the score was low. At 1:30, Philip Pena buried a shot to put the Bears ahead 3-2.

HALFTIME SCORE LANDON 3 BULLIS 2

Maybe it is the Gatorade at half time? Or the alternatively the 2nd half surge attributable to adjustments the Landon coaches make?  Or perhaps the Bears’ depth (4 sets of Middies get lots of playing time; 5-7 long poles swarm the field (while it looks like there are more than 4 at any one time, it is just their individual speeds, their collective D unit movement and their communication that makes them seem omnipresent) makes an enhanced impact during the last 24 minutes? Whatever the symptoms ascribed, it is clear that the Bears rock in the second half.

Charlie Schnider notched a second goal in the scorebook at 10:23. LS 4 BS 2 Peter Laco added his deuce in the Goal column at 4:23.LS 5 BS 2 Bullis’ Kylor Bellistri (44G, 22A per WaPo) must have grown tired of seeing the Orange #25 jersey in front of him, knocking the ball from his stick and shutting him out. {as the teams went out to their ends of the fields at the beginning of the game and as Drew Hayhurst lined up against Bulldog #8, the Bullis coach yelled to his star Attackman “All Day”; it was not a good night for Kylor). The same could also be said for the home team’s second leading scorer, Cary Garfinkel (56 points, op cit) who no longer likes the numbers 12 and 25 in the color of orange.

END OF 3RD Q LANDON 5 BULLIS 2

Patrick (rhymes with hat trick?) Keena was awarded his third assist on a nice pass to Will Laco at 11:02. That was followed by a Hank Brown goals at 9:24. LS 7 BS 2. Bullis’ Cary Garfinkel demonstrated that there was still fight in these dogs with a goal at 6:23. On the next face off, Justin Murphy won the face off by scooping up the GB, sprinted down the field and sizzled a shot into the home nets at 6:15.

1.      When did you start playing lacrosse?

I started playing in sixth grade when I started at Landon.

2.        What is the brand and model of your lax stick; who strings it for you?

I use a warrior krypto pro shaft and an stx x2 head. I usually have the madlax shop string my sticks but my stick this year was strung by charlie schneider.

3.        Who is your favorite college lacrosse player and what team do you follow?

I don’t really follow college lacrosse heavily but my favorite team is the University of Maryland. I have a very good childhood friend who plays for Penn St. so I’d have to say he is my favorite college player.

4.        What is your senior project?

I’m doing the model senate.

5.        Where will you be next year?

Either at the University of the South or the University of Richmond.

6.        Hoops places a lot of emphasis on footspeed and footwork; did your BB career help you as a Defenseman?

I like to think it did. Alot of the same principles about team defense and angles carry over from the court to the field. It can be challenging because there’s so much more open space on a lacrosse field than a basketball court but there are alot of similarities.

7.       What other interests do you have…hobbies, favorite courses, other Landon activities, etc….outside of lacrosse?

I’m a huge fan of ultimate fighting so I’m pretty into that. Some say I have a mild obsession with the Washington capitals. I think it’s strictly mutual. I love rapping to classic rap songs with friends at parties ie. Bust a move.

1.      When did you start playing lacrosse?

I started playing lacrosse in the 4th grade.

2.        What is the brand and model of your lax stick; who strings it for you?

I use a Evo head and a Maverick shaft. Paul Adkins strung my stick for this year.

3.        Who is your favorite college lacrosse player and what team do you follow?

I liked Max Seibald when he played for Cornell. I follow a bunch of teams, mainly Princeton, Hopkins, Harvard, UVA, etc.

4.        What is your senior project?

I am taking a bike trip from Pittsburgh to DC along the Great Allegheny Passage and C & O Canal.

5.        Where will you be next year?

I haven’t decided yet.

6.       You were captain of an undefeated, #1 ranked hockey team and you were on the ice for 30 seconds due to injury. How frustrating was it to not be able to play and how did you help the team?

It was incredibly frustrating to not be out there with my teammates, especially during the IAC and MAPHL playoffs. However, I tried to make the most out of my situation, so I helped the coaches with whatever they needed and tried to inspire the team to play as best as possible.

[editor’s note—having followed the hockey team this year, this answer seriously understates Greg’s contributions to his team; when he was cleared to skate and was on the ice for a few minutes, his teammates went NUTS!!!]

7.       What other interests do you have…hobbies, favorite courses, other Landon activities, etc….outside of lacrosse?

I enjoy playing and watching hockey. In school, I enjoy Economics and Environmental Science.

BEAR LAX TRAX FAX for  4/18-24                                                by John Nichols

Bears vs. Bears

Loyola (Hart) beat Hobart (Chakola) in the week’s lone BvB tilt.  David Chakola saw the field in Statesmen’s loss.  Dave also reeled off a couple of shots in Hobart’s game against Syracuse which was played earlier in the week.

Bears in Action

Josh Offit got his licks in when Duke trucked UVA in the semis of the ACC Tournament.  Josh scored a pair of goals and scooped up two ground balls.  In Duke’s subsequent loss to Maryland, Josh got his shot off, but did not score.

Harrison Archer of the Denver Pioneers also had a 2 goal week as Denver wrapped up the regular season title for the ECAC.  Heading into the ECAC Conference tournament (did you know that Colorado Springs CO, Denver CO and Columbus OH were on the “east coast”?) May 5 & 7, Denver is 10-2 with losses to Syracuse and Notre Dame.

Nick Rhoads had a another strong week facing off for the Tufts Jumbos.  Nick was 14 of 23 at the X and also 9 ground balls.  Tufts wraps up their regular season this week against Bowdoin on Friday.

Austin Dodson has been seeing more playing time for Gettysburg lately and Wes Lincoln got some more faceoff opportunities in the Bullets win over Franklin & Marshall.  Gettysburg will be taking on Haverford in the semis of the Centennial Conference tournament.

Princeton (Reilly, Reilly, Grossman, and Strabo) suffered a tough loss to Harvard.  Connor Reilly (1 shot, 1 ground ball), Mike Grossman (1 goal, 1 ground ball) and Jack Strabo (2 ground balls and 1 caused turnovers) did what they could to keep it close.  Princeton finishes out its regular season this weekend against Ivy league leader Cornell.  The Tigers need to win that game and have Harvard drop their match against Yale in order to qualify for the 4 team Ivy League tournament.   The winner of that tournament is the Ivy’s designated representative to the NCAA tournament.

Max Feely had 2 ground balls and 3 caused turnovers in Cornell’s win over Brown.  Cornell has a lock on the #1 seed for the Ivy League tournament and will finish out their regular season this weekend with a match against Princeton.

CT Fisher of Georgetown played the last 10 minutes of the 2nd period in Georgetown’s loss to Yale.

Ryan Curtis’ Vermont Catamounts dropped a pair of contests this week.  Vermont finishes out their regular season this week against America East conference leader Stony Brook but cannot qualify for the America East Conference tournament.

Teams in New England are finding out what teams in the DC area discovered over the last two years—It’s tough to make the net jump when Will Joyce is standing in the way.  The Crimson Knights are 4-1 (pending results from today’s game against Millbrook) and have allowed 5.2 goals per game while averaging 8.6 goals on offense.  Write ups on the school’s website regularly reference Will’s good play.

This Coming Week

It’s the end of the regular season for most teams.  The last regular season Bears vs. Bears game will feature Cornell (Feely and Paoletta) against Princeton (Reilly, Reilly, Grossman and Strabo) in a must-win game for the Tigers.

Great video of the Jumbo/Bears (Rhoads and Findaro)  2011 Division III NCAA championship season:

A Nichol’s Worth of Information ( his prognosis of the league tournaments and NCAA seedings):

DI:

Cornell (Feely and Paoletta)—In even if they drop their season closer to Princeton then fail to win the Ivy League Tournament

Denver (Archer)—Finishes up against Fairfield this weekend and then hosts the ECAC tournament next weekend.  Likely doesn’t need to win its tournament, but would be best to leave nothing to chance.  If they win out they should be hosting a first round game.

Duke (Offit and Tkac) is a lock for one of the top seeds.  The DI defending champs will wrap up their regular season against Jacksonville then wait a week to see how the selection committee seeds them.

UNC (Leighton-Armah) has one game left against currently undefeated Notre Dame on May 7.  A win there will set them in good shape for the NCAA tournament.  A loss may not hurt too much, but the Heels will be scanning LaxPower for scores in other games.

Bucknell (McDonough) has compiled an impressive 12-2 record and has gone undefeated in the Patriot League.  The Bison are hosting the Patriot League tournament this weekend and may need to win the tournament to be sure of an NCAA tournament bid, depending on what happens elsewhere in DI play.

Hofstra (Cassidy) is the most likely representative from the Colonial Confernce, but this will likely be a one-bid league so winning that league’s tournament to get the automatic qualifier is the key.

Loyola (Hart) pretty much needs to win the ECAC tournament to get in via the league’s AQ slot.

Princeton (Reilly, Reilly, Grossman and Strabo) needs lots of things to go their way—they need to beat Cornell, have Yale beat Harvard then win the Ivy League tournament to capture the league’s AQ slot.

Georgetown (Fisher), Navy (Morrison), Hobart (Chakola), and Vermont (Coach Curtis) are sitting this one out.

DIII:

Tufts (Findaro and Rhoads) looks like a sure thing

Gettysburg (Dodson and Lincoln) may need to win the Centennial Conference Tournament to keep their season going.

Bear First Inning Homers Fly Out at Bullis

The resurgent Bears, following a rainout of their tournament on Saturday were anxious to get back on the diamond to meet the Bullis Bulldogs on Tuesday, April 26th.  The day, in stark contrast to the last week of cool, rainy weather, was sunlit and 80 degrees.  The Bears sported eye black for the first time this year to cut down on reflections from the cloudless sky.  Bullis hosted Landon on their “new field”, which from sideline conversations is now positioned where it was originally, so that the batters have a better view of ball as the sun sets in the western sky.

The top of the first found all five batters hitting the ball hard with Junior Max Kra and Senior Jay Graham both going deep with each of them notching their fourth home runs of the season, giving the Bears a total of 15 home runs this season.

Jack Falvey and Rushmore Johnson combined for a two hitter with Falvey going six strong innings, including five strikeouts and Johnson closing the door in the 7th with no hits and one K.   The bats continued to come alive for the Bears as Jack Falvey, Kyle Colgain (2 RBI), Jay Graham (3 RBI) and Max Kra (2 RBI) all had two hits on the day, including the home runs by Graham and Kra and a pair of Doubles by Colgain.  Ian Kelso and Patrick Burr (1 RBI each) had singles with Falvey laying down a perfect bunt for one of his singles.  Late in the game, as has been the norm throughout this spring season, a bat was checked to see if it was legal.  After some discussion, and a meeting of the “blues”, the bat was declared legal.

The defense was strong including a nifty 5 (Graham) to 4 (Nick Murray) to 3 (Colgain) double play to snuff out a first inning threat by the Bulldogs.  The Bear’s outfielders, Bednar, Schellhammer and Burr also tracked down a number of fly balls in the swirling afternoon winds.  The day concluded with pizza and drinks on the sidelines celebrating an 8-2 win.
