LANDON LAX 12 EHS 4, KB Award and BLTF

The Bearshave established a bit of a formula—shut downdefense for extended periods of time (today 34 minutes of 0 scores by EHS) anda second half execution of the offensive design. Today, Landon scored 8 goalsin the last 24 minutes. The Maroon came to Bethesda having beaten their archrival SSSA in an overtime game; some of that momentum led to the visitor’staking an early 2-0 lead, but the end result was a LANDON 12- EHS4 victory for the home team.

The EHS offense looked sharp scoring on its first twoshots, goals at 4:47 and 2:21. The Bears responded with two similar plays, successive goals by Matt Opsahl on assistsfrom Patrick Keena, at 1:02 and 0:15.2

END OF 1STQ LANDON 2 EHS 2

The Landon D stifled the High School– forcing turnovers, causing bad passes, jumping picks and denying the visitors clears. After thefirst two EHS goals, the Bear defenders (close D, LSMs, SSDMs and G) limitedthe Maroon’s shots to a small number.

The Bear O in this quarter was a Will Laco show scoring successive goals at 5:13 and then on an assist from Matt Opsahl at 3:17

HALFTIME LANDON4 EHS 2

The Bears exploded on offense in the 3rd Q—Patrick Keena on a feed from Tommy Minkler at 8:32, Pearce Minshall ona speed dodge at 5:47, Charlie Schnider ona nifty change of direction move at 1:34 and finally Tommy Minkler on a passfrom Pearce Minshall at 0:42.7

END OF 3RDQ LANDON 8 EHS 2

CharlieSchnider added to the margin on an alley dodgeat9:53. Soph Philip Pena had an unassisted goal at 8:08. Robbie Dunnigan scored from a ridiculous angle at 4:25. Soph Garrett Fellows  scored the 12th tally at 3:14. The field of Bears was heavily populated (beared?) bymany boys who do not yet have their drivers’ license; this glimpse of thefuture was good . EHS broke their scoring drought with two goals in the middleof the last period.

FINAL SCORELANDON 12 EHS 4

1stposthumous KB, That’s A Bear Award, Tommy Minkler

Coach Bordley, havingattended Khari’s funeral hours before the face off, stated that the KB “That’sa Bear” award will be a permanent part of Landon lacrosse. One of the men whospoke at the funeral quoted from a speech which Khari Baten gave whileteaching/coaching at Episcopal Academy. Khari pointed to a very telling momentin which Coach Bordley impressed on his pupil the value of intensity, which KBthen incorporated in his career  as Bear,Ephman and then a coach/teacher.

Men’s NCAA Divison I Tournament

No Bears Vs. Bears games in the 2011 season’s lastweekend of regular season play.

Bears In Action

Cornell (Feely and Paoletta) hosted the Ivy League tournament and had littletrouble, dispatching Yale and Harvard to lock up a perfect season in the Iviesand securing the League’s AQ for the NCAA tournament.  Max Feely had 8ground balls and 3 caused turnovers in Cornell’s two wins.

Denver (Archer) was an equally inhospitable host, dispatching OhioState and then Fairfield (an upset winner over Loyola (Hart)) to wrap up a perfect season inthe ECAC (never knew Denver was in the East, did ya?).   The Pioneersalso wrapped up their leagues AQ to the NCAA tournament.

Hofstra (Cassidy) was upset in the first round of the Colonial AthleticConference, but still received an at-large bid based on their solid 13-2season.  Connor Cassidy made hisway back to the X and won 3 of 4 faceoffs in the game.

Tufts (Findaro and Rhoads) won the NESCAC tournament, getting revenge againstBowdoin which had spoiled their shot at a perfect regular season in leagueplay.  The Jumbos then won a tough overtime contest against Middlebury tolock themselves into the NCAA’s D-III tournament, where they are the defendingchampions.  Nick Rhoads had 6 groundballs and was 21 for 50 on face-offs over the course of the tournament.

There were a couple of regular season games in additionto the slate of league tournaments.  North Carolina (Leighton-Armah) beat Notre Dame inovertime, handing the Irish their second straight loss.  Georgetown (Fisher) got a satisfying end to anotherwise disappointing regular season, beating NCAA tournament boundVillanova.
