Landon Lacrosse 9 Bullis 10
Bullis hit (read as a portmanteau word) the field with expectations of a big win over the Potomac school’s biggest rival. The Bulldogs, with lofty IL (#12) and WaPo (#1) rankings backed with a roster of highly rated players, had dreams of high scoring over the Bears. While beating the Bulldogs is preferable, taking them into a 5th period (O/T) turned their lofty vision into an almost nightmare.
The first seven or so minutes was a series of clears, broken clears, quick shots and misplays befitting of two excited rivals. An inauspicious failed clear led to the Bulldogs 1st goal at 5:19 and soon thereafter a dodge by the Penn bound attackman added #2 at 4:09.
The Bears responded with a well-executed goal from Joey Graham to Graham Hertzberg @ 0:08.8
END OF 1ST PERIOD BEARS 1 BULLDOGS 2
This period started off with a Garrett Kurtz move from behind and converted for the tying goal 10:09. The home team took the lead at 9:17.
Joey G earned the tying goal @7:50. The home team regained the advantage with a goal at 1:24 on an EMO play.
HALFTIME BEARS 3 BULLDOGS 4
The intermission served the visitors well as they scored soon @ 10:33 when Will Carlson connected with Zak Oehlerking for an equalizer.
The Bulldogs earned their 5th tally at 6:16. Joey G fed Guy King for the Bears 5th@4:59.
Two scores by the Potomac team, at 3:40 and then at 1:34 gave them their 2nd two goal lead.
END OF 3RD PERIOD BEARS 5 BULLDOGS 5
Bullis added to its lead with a goal at 11:29. That did not phase the visitors who ran a series of 4 successive goals:
#6 Graham H unassisted @10:46#7 Garrett unassisted @9:42
#8 Graham H unassisted @ 9:10
#9 Joey G A by Ryan Giles @6:28
Now Landon had to hold on to a lead and several Caused Turnovers kept the Bulldogs at bay for much of the remaining time. Several home team penalties, including two against the BS sidelines, helped the D.
END OF REGULAR TIME BEARS 9 BULLDOGS 9
Unfortunately, as the overtime moved to 0:00, the home team scored on a broken play.
FINAL SCORE BEARS 9 BULLDOGS 10
This game could have easily resulted in a Bears’ win, but the Lacrosse Gods did not shine on the Bears. The confidant home team left the field with a new respect for the Bears.
While many Bears deserved a Khari Baten “That’s a Bear” Award, it did not seem appropriate to make a choice under the circumstances.
The inclement weather rendered the scorebook unusable, so the normal set of statistics is unavailable.
