The Warhawks, 2022 VA State 6A champions with a 2023 7-1 record, played the Bears on their Vienna campus. Thus, the game was played under the NFHS rules, which among other variations, do not include a shot clock. As you may guess, as a veteran of 50+ years of watching the sport, I’m OLD SCHOOL in my appreciation of the game: changing face-off rules every other year is not a favorite. What I really didn’t like, I THOUGHT (past tense), is the 90/60 second shot clock. This game was an epiphany – the ball moving aimlessly in the O zone with no sense of urgency IS BORING. 

The visitor coaching staff saw the Warhawks as a worthy test for some of the less experienced Bears- 2 sophomores and 2 freshmen- played a lot. The Landon team played what might be generously called a relaxed style, making more turnovers than usual. The O put up 14 shots and 7 made into the back of the 4th President’s HS goal.
