LANDON LACROSSE 7 DeMATHA 4
The Stags have historical credibility—Paul Rabil is the rock star of the MLL after a career with JHU and the Looney brothers had tremendous careers at USNA and exceptional military achievements. The Hyattsville school has 5 seniors and some underclassmen scheduled to play Div. I lacrosse, per LaxPower.com. So when the Bears walked on DeMatha’s impressive new Heurich Field, there had to be a level of apprehension. It took a while, but Landon’s deeper line-up (minus more than a few starters) took control and earned a 7-4 victory.
Austin Petty, a big sophomore, got on the scoreboard for the home team at 10:07.The Bears responded with a Taylor Valenciagoal off aMatt Potolicchio feed at 7:19. One of the few instances in which the home team was flagged for a penalty resulted in a goal Peter Laco from Matt at 4:14.
END OF 1ST QUARTER BEARS 2 STAGS 1
The second twelve minutes saw no score by either team. Rain? Great D by both teams? Some combination of both? Not sure.
HALFTIME BEARS 2 STAGS 1
Taylor Valencia has a knack for setting the tone for the Bears with an early goal which he deposited in the Stags 6’x 6’ target at 10:08. The Stags showed resiliency with their 2nd goal at 9:27 by Grayson Torrain, another sophomore. The visitors replied with a troika of scores—Mattwith his premier goal today at 8:05, followed by Hank Brown at 4:00 and then his line mateRob Dunigan with three minutes and three seconds until half. The home team did not relent and retaliated with two very quick goals at 1:44 and then 0:65.4 by senior Matthew Justice and Austin Petty, respectively.
END OF 3rd QUARTER BEARS 6 STAGS 4
The last goal of the game was reminiscent of the last game on ice between these two teams; for it was scored by attackman (a/k/a center) Matt Potolicchio after he aggressively pursued a ground ball (one of 6 that he consumed on Heurich Field) that was loose on the crease and to quote Coach Bordley “with apparent disdain for bodily injury” hurtled himself and shot the ball toward the Stags goal for the Bears 7th goal with 10:24 remaining in the game. The remainder of the contest was marked by exceptional saves by both goalies, multiple clears, an inordinate number of turnovers (some forced) and general mayhem.
