Winning ugly is a sport euphemism used when a team is not performing up to expectations, but still is able to eke out a win. The Bears first two contests—against Paul VI and Saint Paul’s—qualify for that moniker and there is something to be said for being able to win without playing your best. Lacrosse is supposed to be a Spring Sport, but Friday’s contest against the Crusaders was played in winter weather.

The team from Brooklandville broke into the scoring box first with an EMO goal. The Bears responded with successive goals–@ 7:21 Guy King beat the SPS goalie with a blast. Much to the vocal dismay of Crusaders’ Coach, the Bears were award an EMO opportunity. The ball whipped around the periphery of the visitor’s D and it arrived in Joey Epstein’s crosse and he moved it up to John Geppert who blasted a shot from about 7 yards and found the corner of the 6 foot by 6 foot @ 1:30.

The first period was sloppy—passes by both teams just missed, shots went wide or high, ground balls seem to take minutes to result with possession and the Crusaders had a high incidence of off-sides calls.

The teams reversed ends of the field and the Bears liked their new positions with 2 goals in the 2nd period. John showed his dodging prowess and freed his hands for a goal @ 6:51. Joey Epstein put a move on his Marquette-bound defender and scored @ 10:41.

The Crusaders responded with three successive goals at 8:33, 1:43 and 0:23.1. All were on broken plays. The scoreboard after 36 minutes showed 4-4 as the numbers.

The Bears took the lead when one of their shots resulted in a scrum in front of the crease. John got control and before the Crusader D could react, scored @10:45. SPS responded with an equalizing goal at 6:33. Both team had chances for victory, but to no avail. Coaches, first SPS then Landon, took time outs to set up THE play. Joey E, set on the wing, used a nice pick to free his hands and blasted at 12 yard goal @0:55.9.

The Crusaders got possession, called their last time out and got the ball to their ace attackman. He made his best move only to feel (he did not see) Mo Sillah’s stick delete the ball from his stick. The ball stayed in the air for a long time; G Mitch Laughlin  threw the ball (a la Bob Cousy for the Celtics in 1963 against the Lakers in the NBA Finals) into lower earth orbit and it did not return to the planet’s surface until after the horn sounded at 0:00.
