Landon Lacrosse 6 Penn Charter 5 (O/T)
Playing * the oldest Quaker School in the world (chartered in 1689) on the grounds of * the oldest Catholic and Jesuit-affiliated institution of higher education in the United States created a supernatural atmosphere. The visitors from the powerhouse Pennsylvania Inter Academic League had an 0-2 record, BUT the losses were to 6-0 Hill Academy (#3 IL rating 90.29) and 2-0 Brunswick (#11 IL 87.05 rating). The Quakers’ roster includes a UVA FO recruit, a Boston U D recruit and an Amherst G recruit. To add to the unusual atmosphere, the DMV was experiencing a regional gridlock due to an accident on the Beltway.
The Bears took an early lead with two goals—Graham Hertzberg unassisted @11:02 and then Joey Graham unassisted @ 2:04. The game was played under Pennsylvania HS rules; so, there was no 80 second clock, no legal “dive” and the subjective “timer on” call. The “home” team’s D was able to frustrate the Quakers O into several time violations and in rides.
END OF 1ST Q BEARS 2 QUAKERS 0
PC’s offense got going with a nice running goal at 10:37. Graham got his second goal @5:38. Another Quaker scored at 6:41. The Bears responded with a Graham bull dodge @5:30. And the visitors narrowed the margin by scoring at 0:46.4.
The Landon EMD team was tested with 5 advantages to Penn Charter. G Mitch Laughlin, close D- Jake Cohen, Joe Koegel, Matt Kopp, Farley Price, LSMs- Ryan Giles, Cullen Brown and SSDMs- Chantz Hartley, Billy Banfield did not allow a goal—including one time in which they were two men short.
HALFTIME BEARS 4 QUAKERS 3
Landon took advantage of its first one man advantage with a goal by Gavin Seasholes on a beautiful feed from Guy King @ 3:36. The bears would not score again until overtime.
The visitors tied it up with goals at 2:42 and at 2:31.
END OF 3RD Q BEARS 5 QUAKERS 5
The last 12 minutes was a defensive battle. The home D did not allow their visitors to put a shot on goal. The referees found fault with the play of two Bears—one sitting for 60 seconds and another for ½ a minute. Great team D forced the ball to the ground and a CT. The Landon O put a lot of shots on goal but the Quaker G denied them.
END OF REGULATION TIME BEARS 5 QUAKERS 5
As the 4th Q drew to and end, the referees indicated that PC committed one personal and one technical foul. Landon held the ball as the 48th minute expired; so, they started off the O/T with possession. The Quakers ably defended the Bears EMO. The play continued with both teams at even strength and Landon holding onto the ball. Guy found Graham who converted for his 4th goal @2:16 of the overtime.
What an epic battle!!!
