Landon Lacrosse 5 Georgetown Prep 6 in O/T
The Hoyas have a roster with 9 Division I recruits, an 8-3 record (with losses to the then #1, #9 and #23) and a scoring average of 13. According to an internet savant, the GP boys expected to atone for past losses (4 in a row?) with a big win.
This was a game of D. One strength of the team from Rockville is a number of big time long pole recruits. The Wilson Lane boys include some talent in the G, among the close Ds, within the fellows who carry the 6’ sticks but run out in midfield and the most athletic position in lax—SSDMs.
The game got started with a quick goal (corner shot) from just above GLE by Joey Graham 11:12.
The blue and gray Bulldogs responded with three consecutive shots which found net at 9:19, 7:58 (EMO) and 7:21.
END OF 1ST Q HOYAS 3 BEARS 1
The visitors momentum continued with their 4th consecutive goal early after the intermission.
Later in the period, Evan Schwartz showed his marksmanship beating the GP G @5:26.
HALFTIME HOYAS 4 BEARS 2
Clearly the halftime adjustments made by Coaches Healey and Bordley worked; for the home team had their own duo of defense busters. On an extra man situation Guy King moved possession over to Graham Hertzberg who buried it @7:55.
The next goal was an effective 1800 rotation by Garrett Kurtz —“he’s all left” was the constant GP call, but they did not anticipate his half turn from East to West = left = goal @ 6:05. The teams were tied.
The visitors responded at 5:26 to take a +1 advantage.
Joey G fed Graham H for the tying goal @4:50.
END OF 3RD Q BEARS 5 HOYAS 5
Minutes 36:01 to 48:00 was an epic defensive battles. The Bears poles (Jake Cohen, Max Becker, Ryan Giles, Joe Koegel, Cullen Brown, Matt Kopp) caused turnovers, body-checked, slide and beat their opponents to loose balls. What was particularly impressive was Mitch Laughlin who made several spectacular saves (normal), scooped up several GBs (unusual) and occasioned at least 3 Caused Turnovers (unheard of, especially outside of the crease). The SSDMs (Chantz Harley, Billy Banfield and Miles Tonkel) employed speed, physicality and sliding to discourage the visitors from visiting the inner sanctum of the home end.
There were dramatic timeouts by opposing coaches in the waning seconds of the regular time—TO NO AVAIL.
END OF 4TH Q BEARS 5 HOYAS 5.
It was the best of times—Will Bou cleanly won the O/T faceoff. It was the worst of times—GP regained possession and a fast break at 0:21 seconds expired scored.
Two IAC rival loses both by overtime goals. As disappointing as these games are, one can see that the Bears of April 18 are immensely better than their play on March 5. Optimism would project greater improvement by the last game, wins?
