Landon Lacrosse 13 O’Connell 6

A year ago, a very experienced Bear team traveled to the Knights’ home field on a very cold day and the visitors won 7-3. In 2016, a young Landon team (for example, only 9 seniors and a large sophomore group of 12) played the O’Connell squad on a 700 +, sunny day; the final score was 13-6 in favor of the home team. Coach Bordley got to see lots of the new additions to this year’s roster and that depth was telling.

The game started, as it always does, at the X and Justin Shockey grabbed the ball and after a few strides, scored after a mere 7 seconds had expired. (For those ascribe some value in symmetry, the last play pf the 2015 season set this script; Jarett Witzal beat his GP opponent and run down the field to score ending that game with an exclamation point!)

The remainder of the opening 12:00 minutes was a little less precipitous. At 4:26 Tyler McTague took a shot and it ricocheted off of Nate Buller and that redirection resulted in a goal (NCAA AR 2 [section2, Article 1 of NCAA’S Manual)—credit Tyler with an assist and Zach with a goal @4:26. The advantage grew @ 2:39 when Griffin Brown threaded a pass to Colin O’Brien for the 3rd goal of the game.

The Landon D, which rotated a lot of players, so the list is too long for this report, denied the O’C offense much room to breathe, much space to shoot.

END OF 1ST QUARTER BEARS 3 KNIGHTS 0

The next 12 minute segment was a blur of Bear offense; here is a summary of these goals:

Goal #        scored by            assisted by                             time

  1.                Ryan Pride               —                                          10:43

  2.                  Griffin Brown        Nate Buller                             8:16

  3.                  Garrett Kurtz         Drennan Greene                   6:09

  4.                  Greene                     Pride                                        2:16

  5.                   Greene                   ——-                                   0:01.6

The Knights scored a goal at 1:13.

END OF 2nd QUARTER BEARS 8 KNIGHTS 1

After the halftime break, many of the newer players were inserted in the line-up. Griffin fed John Geppert for goal #9 @ 11:20. The next tally was probably the best display of O talent @ 7:48—Ryan fed Griffin on the crease and the senior middie, with his back to the goal, shot the ball with a “no look” backhand goal.

The Knights put three consecutive goals on the scoreboard.

END OF 3rd QUARTER BEARS 10 KNIGHTS 4

The last quarter gave the O’C team some more opportunities and they deposited three unanswered goals. To close out the game, the Bears recorded the last three scores.

That Knight wave caused the home team to respond—Griffin with an Extra Man goal @ 5:34; a feed from Tyler to Zach Johnson @ 4:21; and the lucky 13th goal was by Brett Gallagher@ 2:56.
