Landon Lacrosse 13 EHS 5
The IAC does not have a weak link; every team has a winning record with top ranked opponents in the DMV, MIAA and national standings. Episcopal has several highly recruited athletes (including one previously ranked as the #1 prospect, now to play football for Stanford; plus studs heading to Maryland, Duke and Quinnipiac). .
[ As an amateur sports historian, it is interesting to note that appropriately, its fans cheered “Let’s Go Hiiiigh Schooool {said with a strong Southern accent). That term of endearment disappeared, and the Alexandria teams were called the MAROON, more PC?. The visitors’ helmets bore the label “The High School.” ***Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose***]

On senior day, in which 21 members of the Class of 2018 and their parents (plus one dog), and in a game marking Coach Bordley’s last home game at the helm, the Bears beat the boys from the High School 13-5.
Every opponents know that in order to beat the Bears, you shut off #1. Easier said than done; Joey Epstein attacked GLE causing the EHS D to rotate. One Maroon long pole jumped to shut off the Landon attackman, a second moved to the adjacent home player, Joey passed to (hockey assist) Zach Johnson (lacrosse assist) who moved it to John Geppert for a goal @10:14.
After some up and down the field, @4:07 John swept through the midfield, got his hands free and shot his second consecutive goal.
The natural hat trick was completed by John, as he beat a triple team @1:59. [Landon mark {portmanteau word LANDMARK} — #7’s sweep here was proximate to the turf where he on a 4th and 18 against EHS on another Senior Day scored a touchdown in O/T 11/4/17 score 27-26.]
END OF 1ST Q BEARS 3 MAROON 0
The next period registered a new name in the scorebook as Gilbert Sentimore received a pass at the end of a Bear fastbreak (hockey assists to Miles Tonkel and Joey E), beat his man and scored @9:16. A High School player was found to have violated some rule and the home team was given an EMO advantage. John used the plus 1 to his advantage with a goal @4:04.
The future Cardinal, now Maroon, player tallied his team’s 1st goal at 3:52.
Within a minute a Landon shot rebounded and Joey E got the ground ball and passed it to Joey Graham who buried it @7:29.
A great save by Mitch Laughlin sparked a quick transition. John moved the ball to Gilbert who deposited it behind the EHS goalie @ 0:15.2

It is a real privilege to watch these young men grow for as many as four years. The hours that they dedicate to their craft is extraordinary. Their ability to internalize complex schemes and implement them under the crucible of competition. These observations apply to every boy on the roster. Practices must be as exacting as game conditions; so, all 42 players must work hard Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. They should be commended for their dedication and tireless commitment.
While they may not be sprinting on Triplett Field, Moms and Dads are making time to support their sons, to drive them to/from practices/camps/showcases, bringing crates of Gatorade & water to the team and a 1,000 other tasks. THANKS.
Finally, last but not least, the coaching staff. In 2002, the Baltimore Sun, a publication which believes that real lacrosse does not exist out side of I-695, wrote an article entitled:
Shaping the landscape Boys lacrosse: In rolling through the toughest Baltimore-area competition, Landon of Montgomery County has reached the top of the hill as the nation's best.
Lem Satterfield, the author who came to a couple of Landon games this year, observed that the Landon program had redefined what was expected to be a good high school lacrosse team. Yes, someone might scout a big rival the week before the traditional matchup, but the entire staff heading out each week to see all of the teams—that was not Baltimore then. A high school coach- driving through miserable weather to watch a college team practice (said with the disdain of Alan Iverson) so that he might learn a new ride or how to execute a “weasel” on a clear or how to execute a complex EMO- that was unheard of in the land of 410 area code.
That is the level of effort which Coach Bordley has demanded of himself. The Landon coaches provide a lax education equal to most college programs. Having talked to an HOF coach about an incoming Bear, it was clear that (a) he expected the freshman to be one of his on-the-field-coaches and (b) the player would quickly command the respect of his teammates. The Bear was one of 50+ graduates of Bordley Lax 400 course who went on to be elected team captain his senior year.
This may have been Coach Bordley’s last regularly scheduled home game, but his influence will be seen in hundreds of Bears who learned from him in his class room, on the college playing fields where Bears continue to excel, in the eyes of the players returning next year and in the leadership of Ian, JR and the other coaches.
