Landon Lacrosse 11 St. Andrews 9
The Lions are an up-and coming team, particularly based on the fact that one of their players has recruited by the UAlbany Great Danes—a national power known for its offensive stars. St. Andrews had already defeated WCAC Good Counsel by 5 goals. SAES arrived at Bordley Stadium prepared to meet, if not beat, its #1 opponent on its schedule. The home team was playing with a shortened bench due to illness and with anticipation of playing MIAA powerhouse St. Mary’s.
On a surprisingly frigid afternoon, the Bears were hot early. Joey Graham, who frequently commands the attention of the opponents’ D, saw Guy King out in front of the Lions’ goal with time and space available. #7 stepped down and beat the SAES goalie @ 10:42. Not much later in the 1st period, Joey G beat his man and scored @8:15.
The home team turned the ball over and the Lions were able to score an Empty Net goal at 4:47.
Two members of the 2020 class tallied the next two goals for the Bears. Zak Oehlerking was fed by Joey G @ 3:10 for Landon goal #3. Then Zak found freshman Cameron Brown for the next goal @ 2:21.
END OF 1ST PERIOD BEARS 4 LIONS 1
The visitors converted on an EMO ten seconds into the 2nd period. The future Great Dane can shoot!
That inspired the Bears to retaliate. Again using the step down tactic, Will Carlson spied Guy ready for a pass out in one of the scoring zones—pass, step down and goal @10:43. Will C (there are 3 Will’s on the roster) showed his speed on a sweep dodge and scored @7:53. Graham Hertzberg showed how a bull dodge is properly executed to make the Bear margin +5 @6:28.
SAES responded with another goal by their #0 at 4:17.
With an end line clear for the visitors, the Bear coaches called a special ride. Graham intercepted a pass and got the ball to Billy Banfield who deposited it in the back of the Lions’ net.
HALFTIME BEARS 8 LIONS 3
The Guy to Joey G connection started the 2rd period. King to Graham 11:32 for an EMO goal.
The Lions upped their ante to 4 at 9:30. Billy registered his 2nd goal on a fast break 5:33. The Lions ten responded with three consecutive goals—4:55, 3:40 and 1:00 (the last on EMO)
END OF 3RD QUARTER BEARS 10 LIONS 7
The talented visitors reduced the home team margin with their goal #8 at 9:25.
