The WaPo #1 vs. #2; IL national rankings of #3 v. #6; rosters filled with talent including the IL #4 attackman (Bullis)[you know the impressive Bear recruit list]; TV cameras and reporters lined the field; opposing teams that have battled for many years with the Bulldogs earning their 1st IAC trophy (outright) in 2016. Under the lights in Potomac, MD though the stands seemed to be predominantly occupied by Bear fans. As the lacrosse teams lined up, members of the Landon baseball team victorious (4-2) over Bullis added to the support for their Brothers.
True to form, Justin Shockey (18/21 @ X for the night plus 10GBs) won the first face-off and the Bulldogs dropped into a zone defense. While a novel tactic, it didn’t work. John Geppert fed Gilbert Sentimore at the edge of the home goal’s crease and the recipient quickly buried it behind the netminder @ 10:56.
Justin won at X again and drove to the Bullis goal and deposited the second ball in the back of the home net @ 10:49 (yes that’s 0:07 after the 1st).
The UNC recruit got on the board at 6:57 FOGO play resulted possession by Ryan Pride who immediately passed it to Gilbert who tallied his second safe deposit @ the Bullis ATM @6:38. The jerseys earned a nice goal on a speed dodge at 5:39.
The next significant play was an injury to Carter who had been playing exceedingly effectively. Bullis once again tried to see if the Bears could beat a zone, which they did. This time, the initiating pass came from Gilbert and found the crosse of Nate Buller for the next goal @4:38.
The same swift Bullis middie beat the Bear D and scored at 0:14.1
END OF 1ST Q BEARS 4 BULLDOGS 3
Landon recorded the 1st two goals of this period. A fast break by Zach Johnson created an odd man rush, to borrow an apt hockey analogy, and the ball remained in Nate’s stick just long enough to launch past the Bulldog netminder @6:34. Ninety seconds later the tallying team was a Joey Epstein to Ryan combination for score #6 @5:02.
The home team narrowed the margin to one with goals at 4:20 and 0:46.7
HALFTIME BEARS 6 BULLDOGS 5
A penalty against Bullis carried over to the next stanza and the Bear EMO saw Joey connect with Zach for a blast @11:41. Off of the face-off, wingman John Geppert scooped the ball, created more separation with his speed and made the Bear lead +3 @ 11:20.
The home team responded with its sixth goal at 8:49.
Two consecutive goals—a Garrett Kurtz feed to Gilbert whose multiple fakes beat the Bulldog goalie @ 8:04; then an inverted Zach fed Nate for goal #10
END OF 3RD Q BEARS 10 BULLDOGS 6
The last quarter was a test of the Landon D (averaging only 4.5 GA) by the Bullis O (averaging 12.6 GS). The close D, Andrew Fowler (3 CTs, 15 GBs), Cam James (who shut out the Bulldogs’ 3rd leading scorer and frequently added to the miseries of the Bullis leading scorer), Carter, Drew P. Wellington, Doug Chirite and Will Amoroso; plus LSM Mo Sillah: and Shane Corcoran (10 saves, 2 CTs and 3 GBs) cooled off the home offense.
The last quarter saw the white jerseys double the shots of prior periods and they earned scores at 7:48 and 5:17.
The Bears closed out the game.
