The Landon Varsity continued its balanced attack and unbeaten record by beating Severna Park 11-1 on January 10.  The Bears out shot their opponent 36-11.  Landon had 9 different goal scores (see recap below), with Isaac Porter recording a hat trick.  Landon had 13 assist by 9 different players. Goaltending was led by Sam Kroll.

The game seemed to start slowly with Landon leading 2-0 after the first period.  Coach Gammill wasn’t happy with the Bears effort despite the score.  This reporter doesn’t what the coaching staff was saying on the bench, but apparently Coach Gammill threatened to hold a conference call with Mr Murphy via his cell phone, in order to light a fire under the Bears’ attack.  Whatever was actually said, it seemed to work.  The Bears responded with 6 straight unanswered goals (including an Isaac Porter hat trick), and added 3 insurance goals in the third.  Apparently these Bears respond!!!  Rumor has it, that Mr. Murphy is planning a surprise guest coaching appearance in an upcoming game.  He always has his “to do list” with him of activities that students can perform after school!!

I am going to deviate a little from the “That’s a Bear” game award.  The score sheets usually are the first place to search for a player of the game. For this game and actually for just about every game that I have seen this player play, the score sheet does not tell the whole story.  This player gives his teammates 110% effort every time he steps on the ice.  He works hard every practice and his performance shows.  In my opinion, he can take credit for making his line mates better players.  He leads by action, passing (crisp passes always), hitting and lending his support to his fellow teammates whenever needed.  Let’s not forget, he has been known to take a nap in prior years, but I believe it was due to the heavy homework load.  The Landon player of the game is Johnny Cobb.   Players like Johnny don’t always get notice, but take a look at your next Landon Hockey Game, you won’t be disappointed. According to Coach Gammill, “Johnny is just a steady player.  Every team needs a Johnny Cobb!”  This boy can play.  Even Moose Cobb (proud Papa Bear) is afraid to play against him on the ice!  Johnny, we can think of no better award for you than your own personal assistant to make sure you awaken from those extra naps.  The team has submitted this request to Mr. Fed.

======================================================================================

On January 11, the Saxons of Langley High School visited the denizens of the Rockville Ice Arena and the NoVa school attempted to match the Bears (even with 2 injuries, there were 20 white sweaters in the home box) , with a limited roster of 8 forwards, 4 defense men and two goalies. For much of the first period, the Saxons skated with energy. They saw Isaac Porter convert passes from Joel Rosenzweig and Matt Potolicchio for a goal at 9:24, Bears 1 Saxons 0.

The visitors responded with a nice goal at 7:47 to tie it up Bears 1 Saxons 1. The home boys retaliated at 1:45 with another Isaac Porter (2ND of this game)goal with assists fromJohnny Cobb and Mike Anderson. And thus endeth, the 1st period, BEARS 2 SAXONS 1; SOGs B 11, S10 .

The Bears roster depth advantage was amply demonstrated during the next 15 minutes. The home team put 18 more shots on goal in the 2nd period, while the visitors only amassed another 6 shots which Alex Joyce had to save (game total for #1= 18). The results of all this offense were 5 Landon goals:

END OF 2ND PERIOD BEARS 7 SAXONS 1; SOGs B 29 S 16

Moving and controlling the puck as well as a running the clock were the rules of the last period. Coach Gammill wanted to assure that sloppy play did not occur and bad habits developed due to the score. The Bears listened and showed their superior skating and passing during this 15 minutes. Much to their credit, the Saxons did not relent. Despite their efforts, Jack Barton(a sophomore) found the back of the net with his second goal at 11:20. The Bears powerplay worked well with assists to Matt Potolicchio and Max Greenwald. BEARS 8 SAXONS 1. A few minutes later, Jack Barton completed his hat trick at 5:00 and he was assisted by Max Greenwaldand David Lackner. Credit to the Saxons who checked at both ends of the rink and displayed a lot of effort.

FINAL SCORE BEARS 9 SAXONS 1

THAT’S A BEAR AWARD goes to ISAAC PORTER with 4 goals and 1 assist
