History lesson predicate: Calvert Hall College High School is named for Cecil Calvert, 2nd Baron Baltimore, the first Proprietor of the Province of Maryland. The settlement was unique among the original thirteen colonies in that the Baron was Catholic and his “state” permitted religious freedom.

The family crest reflects both sides of his parents- the yellow and black section was awarded to his paternal side as a reward for his storming a fortification during a battle (the vertical bars approximate the bars of the palisade) and the red/white design reflect his mother’s lineage, the Crossland’s– features a cross bottony with the red and white sides of the cross alternating.

With that history, you know now the origin of the team’s red and gold colors (as well as the UnderArmour ® gear of UMD).

The Cardinals have had a frustrating season with a MAPHL record of 1-9, but as one of two MIAA teams to depart from their Baltimorean turf to play IAC and WCAC teams. Suffice to say that a roster which had some talent did not meet their expectations. That vexation was the cause for seven penalties totaling 16 minutes in the sin bin (essentially, they played a man down for more than a period).

The Bears’ forechecking resulted in many CH losses of possessions allowing the Gold Sweaters to maintain possession for a disproportionate amount of the TOI.

The Cardinal goalie worked hard, stopping 52 shots; while Leo Quattrone made 15 saves for a shutout in his second start.

The Bears may have received some additional motivation from Basketball Coach Turner and some of his players in attendance.
