LANDON HOCKEY 6 GONZAGA 2

A MAPHL semi-final is likely to be a battle, especially when its an opponent with whom they have already encountered in two previous games. The proud Purple Eagles (GCHS) earned this opportunity by earning a 1st round bye and then beating Archbishop Spaulding 5-0. Adding to their swagger, the Eye Street squad upset their arch rival SJCHS 2-1 in the WCAC championship.

Expectations were diminished by the end of the opening period:

  • SENIOR #10 OWEN MOORE added to his season totals by assisting on SENIOR #3 REID PERKHON’s GOAL @6:35

  • #10 OWEN put up his 4th MAPHL PLAYOFF GOAL with an ASSIST TO #21 ELI SMINK @04:17

SENIOR #30 JACK LICALSI stopped all 4 of the GCHS SoGs, while his teammates peppered the opposing netminder with 5.

The next 15 minutes had a Déjà vu all-over-again pattern.

  • Technically the GWG was deposited in the Eye Stret goal, by #3 REID, unassisted @4:23

  • The REID to OWEN connection @2:09 added to the Home team lead.

A good goal scoring percentage is over 10% of the SOGs. The Bear Offense shot 5 times scoring at a 40% rate. Once again, JACK blanked Gonzaga on their 9 shots, also an exceptional save percentage. I

Over first 2 periods, befitting two of the least penalized teams, there were only 4 penalty minutes. During the last fifteen minutes, skaters (wearing purple and white sweaters) spent a total of 24 minutes in the sin bin.

To start this last section #3 REID notched a HAT TRICK @8:08. Benefitting from a 5 on 3 advantage, the Eagles scored twice at 4:54 and 4:27), bringing them to a deficit of 2. SENIOR #13 WATTS COLCLOUGH shot from afar and put his Team’s 6th goal in an empty net @0:09. Landon 6 SOGs, 2 goals a 33% rate. The Bear D with the ferocity of the mascot’s temperament (particularly if angered) held the desperate GCHS skaters to 4 SOGs in this final minutes of their season.
