The Stags of Hyattsville traveled to the Bears Den 2nd in MAPHL points and 2nd in the league PIMs count. A win on 2/9 would impact of both teams’ seeding for the playoffs. The home team score first and was never behind.
Early in the opening period, Owen Calderone blasted up the right wing, broke through the blue line and SLAPPED from the faceoff circle scoring @14:20. At 2:50 minutes remaining in this stanza, the Stags scored a PP goal.
The home team was undaunted and responded @1:12 when Alex McMillen(sp?) connected with Quinn Farland who in turn passed the hard rubber cylinder to Owen for his 2nd goal @1:12.
GAME OBSERVATION: Landon’s D was adroit at stick-checking, causing many DM turnovers. The breakout plays were efficient for the Den Denizens. One-v-One battles were won primarily by the guys in white sweaters, an attribute of many Bear teams- could it be that so many of the skaters compete in other sports and are more comfortable with random movements so common for the pucks on ice.
Leo Quattrone had 4 saves and the Bear O put 16 shots on goal.
END OF 1ST PERIOD BEARS 2 STAGS 1
As another Landon penalty expired, DeMatha tied the game at 5:54. Then, Captain Mike Hardie broke the tie when he broke through the DM D to tally Bears #3 and go ahead goal @3:09.
The middle segment of this game saw the Bears put 18 SOGs and Leo stop all but one of the visitors 8 SOGs
END OF 2ND PERIOD BEARS 3 STAGS 2
The last period was a defensive battle. The Bear D held the DM offense to 8 shots—all of which Leo stopped. The game stats understate the Landon goalie’s contribution to the win—there were 1 Stag breakaway in period #1 and other in #2; both stopped by Quattrone plus multiple point blank attempts particularly in the last period.
At 2:20 the DM coach pulled his goalie in the midst of a Stag PP. The Landon D and #30 stopped all of the attempts. To ice the game, Quinn scored an EN @1:32. The visitors still pulled their goalie to no avail. AS THE FINAL HORN SOUNDED, THE VISITORS INITIATED A CONTRETEMPS BY HITTING A BEAR FOR NO APPARENT REASON AT ALL.
FINAL SCORE BEARS 4 STAGS 2
To repeat a favorite closing line to a sporting event, the Bears won:
