Landon Hockey 3 St. John’s College High School 3
In a game reminiscent of the 1968 game between two undefeated Ivy League football teams. The boys from the Connecticut Community College of New Haven were heavily favored. It led the Commonwealth Community College of Cambridge 22-0, but the Cantabs, the Haarvaad moniker, fought back trailing 13-29 with less than one minute to play. The home boys tied it up inspiring a famous The Harvard Crimson headline (later made into a documentary.)

On Friday, February 7, the WaPo #1 Cadets highly favored (“I don’t know which teams outside schools in Minnesota that could have [three] potential Division I players on one high school team,” St. John’s Coach Gregg Marinari said. “I don’t think there’s ever been a team before in the DMV that has had that many.”) faced the #7 Bears in a MAPHL contest at the magnificent SJCHS rink. The home team’s only MAPHL loss was to Georgetown Prep. To add to the drama, it was the SJCHS senior night; so, there was pressure on the Cadets to beat the Bears.
The Bears outshot the Cadets 14 to 7, but due to spectacular goalie play there was no score.
END OF 1ST PERIOD BEARS 0 CADETS 0
The next fifteen minutes saw some scoring and time in the respective penalty boxes. The home team scored first on a powerplay goal at 8:35 during a five minute advantage. Much to the such of the home crowd, a beautiful pass from Kareem Al-Azem, with his Dad watching, to Matthew Brille, who has committed to Brown University (a Division I school), sped by the Cadet defenders for a great short-handed goal @ 7:31.
Two more SJCHS penalties were successfully defended by their PK team, but as the last violation expired, JH Lages fed Ryan Giles for a go ahead goal @ 0:30.9
END OF MIDDLE TERM BEARS 2 CADETS 1
BEARS SoGS 11 BEAR SAVES 13
It should be noted that Max Weinstein had a spectacular night in the nets with many point blank stops and amazing saves through multiple screens. So too, the Cadet goalie defeat many Bear shots
Minutes 30:01 to 45:00 were as exciting as any high school hockey game in the DMV and beyond.
The home crowd, which was numerous and vociferous, appreciated the tying tally at 5:47 of period 3. A go ahead goal was registered at 3:42 on their second successful PP. Back to the Crimson analogy, the favored team took a commanding position with little time left.
The Bears defined their character in the remaining 221 seconds and overcame a seemingly insurmountable advantage. Max exited his crease with about 1:55 remaining. Coach Erickson called a time-out @ 1:43. A battle ensued between the two teams, but eventually, the puck came to Matt who shot the puck towards the SJCHS net, as it approached the blue ice, it was redirected by Joey and then was tipped by Will Lawrence past the Cadets G for a goal @ 0:28.5
The less than ½ minute was surprisingly eventful, but there was no further scoring. Onto the MAPHL playoffs.
