The Bears have played the “Sallies” [Salesianum (Latin for “House of Sales”, referring to St. Francis de Sales)] in a home-and-away for a number of years. The all-boys school has a successful hockey program holding the ‘22-’23 Philadelphia Catholic Hockey banner with 8 seniors on their roster.
The 2 hour ride on the bus did not impede the visitors’ skating as the Sallies showed swift skating, good structure, and sophisticated skill. The home team took a while to adjust to their opponents’ style of play. One of Salesianum shots beat Landon’s netminder, Daniel Rosenstock, at 8:40 of Period 1. The freshman G stopped 7 of the Delawarean shots, while the Bears peppered the opposing G with 11 shots. All saved.
Curiously, the pace of the Sallies slowed in the 2nd period while the Bears gained momentum: @13:05, Christian Binner cashed in on assists from Owen Moore and Zach Gensler; @4:14 the puck moved from Caden Blazer to Ryan Biderman deposited in the back of the net by Reid Pehrkon; to complete the troika AT THE BUZZER FROM AN IMPOSSIBLE ANGLE, Owen earned his second goal with assists to Graham Haberl and Caden. BEARS 6 SOGs; SALLIES 4 (all saved by Daniel).
After the rink was deiced, the play was high level, the Landon D stifled the DE boys (only 3 Sally SOGs) and no goals were recorded (Daniel blocked all 3 shots). With 2:07 remaining, the visitors pulled their back stopper. No 6 on 5 goals and the Landon long range empty net shots did not draw net.
