——–LANDON HOCKEY 2 SJCHS 1——–

Early season hockey is never pretty; it’s not until midseason that passes connect, shots test the opposing goalie and skating up/down the ice looks like they were choreographed by Mikhail Baryshnikov, the famous Latvian left wing of the Kirov roster. On December 4, the #2 St. Johns team faced the #3 Bears. The play was spirited if not artistic.

This game did not count on IAC or MAPHL standings.

Coach Parker put new to Landon, #31GREG STAFFELL in goal and the junior stopped 20 of the Cadets 21 SOG (8/8/5).

The home team peppered the visitor netminder with 9 shots. One of those, @8:42 found the back of the net off a blast from the point, by #18 DASH COFFMAN off an assist by #3 REID PEHRKON.

During the middle period, the Cadets came alive outshooting the Bears 9 to 7. Their only score was the product of good forechecking and a close-in shot at 5:50.

Minutes 30:01-45:00 saw a more energetic white-sweatered squad. A substantial advantage 16 v. 3 in shots on net showed the benefit of this more aggressive skating. Their hard work led to the line of REID and #6 OLIVER LINDER-BODAGER feed #13 WATTS COLCLOUGH, who in spite of some CADET STICK, HUNG TOUGH and DROVE the GWG goal @ 7:41. WaPo’s #3 team continued to battle, but Coach Parker’s structured defense did not break. At 0:53 the SJ goalie left his crease and then at 0:19.3 the visiting coach called a time out to set up the tying goal. The Landon team defense defeated that plan.

FINAL SCORE LANDON 2 SJCHS 1

 12/6 @BEARS DEN 6:10pm v. Paul VI
