The Prep-Landon rivalry is fierce. StA Has been a targeted opponent for decades. No Bear likes Bullis. But the Little Hoyas v. Landon in all sports in every year means the most; so, it is with a heavy heart to report that GP beat the Bears Friday, 1/24 at the Cabin John, the home team won 3-2 in a well-played, highly competitive match.

The home team is  #1 in MAPHL and curiously #3 in WaPo plays on a rink that has putrid ice and does not get refreshed after the 2^nd period like almost every DMV’s home rinks. They boisterous GP fans were somewhat disquieted by the Bears taking it to the blue-sweated skaters. The gold clad visitors showed tremendous energy, physicality and effective forechecking in the first period. The “Bulldogs” were whistled for the 1^st and 3^rd penalties. No score resulted from either of the first two PPs, but the third saw @ 3:48 Matthew Brille better the GP goalie.

The second 15 minutes started with another Bear penalty at 11:42. The face-off in the Landon D zone saw the puck move back to a Prep defenseman, whose rocket slap shot arrived in the nets at 11:34.

Less than a minute later, the visitors’ energy resulted in a beautiful assist from Will Lawrence and a superb tip in goal by Ryan Giles @ 6:13.

The Bears defended another GP PP, but soon thereafter a Little Hoya breakaway evened the score at 3:23.

Prep was whistled for another infraction, but the exceptional Bulldog goalie stopped several great Bear opportunities.

After 5 minutes of the last period, Prep scored on a scrum at the edge of the Bear blue iced crease. A 3-2 advantage at 10:25 was not insurmountable and the Bears fought hard every second. Pucks were seemingly poised for certain tallies, but the Bulldog goalie’s glove or stick or body or pads frustrated every opportunity.
