The Bears played their BEST 48 minutes of the year against a good SSSA Saint, which has a win over GP on its 2014 record. This was an absolutely complete team victory with overpowering line play on O and D, running which seemed to zoom by the visitors defenders, and the home defense was rock solid. Landon’s offense unofficially gained 232 yards on 35 carries for 5 TDs plus 2 TD passes.
Landon football is dedicated to the concept that every player on the 50 boy roster is an important contributor on practices and game day. Today was the first time that the Class of 2013 Victory Bell was rung. Based on his numerous defensive and kickoff hits as well as his 117 yards rushing yards plus 5 TDs (one through the air), Johari Johnson definitely rang the bell from his play.
The first three times that the Bears possessed the ball, they scored. Receiving the opening kickoff, Landon drove 69 yards on nine plays. Five runners (Colton Rupp, Robbie Adkins, Josh Hunter, Joey Epstein) carried the ball for all but the last two yards which was a Robbie to Johari TD pass @ 7:50 and the PAT was good to make it Bears 7 Saints 0
The visitors had a sloppy initial possession drawing 3 penalties over 12 plays. Paul Padalino recorded a 3 yd. TFL. The snap for the punt rolled past the kicker and the rugby style punter was able to miraculously kick the ball.
Landon started off its 2nd drive with a short field only 43 yards to a TD, which they covered in three plays. The O line (Tom Evans, Joey Tabb, Peter Millsbaugh, Trent Whalen and Steven Gee) cut up the SSSA large defensive front seven. The last 24 yards were covered by Johari @ 2:02; the TD was followed by a successful PAT to make it Bears 14 Saints 0
The Landon D stifled the Saints’ O forcing a three and out. A poor punt by the visitors set up the Bears with great field position. The last 18 yards were covered by Johari for his 3rd consecutive TD @ 2:02. The successful PAT made it Bears 21 Saints 0
The SSSA team saw the Cameron Drooz kick off go into the end zone; so they started at their own 20 yard line. Two plays took the game into the 2nd Quarter.
END OF 1ST Q BEARS 21 SAINTS O
They turned the ball over on downs and five plays later Landon was in the end zone on a Robbie to Julius Kindfuller pass for a TD 9:27. The PAT made it Bears 28 Saints 0
The visitors were stopped in 8 plays and much of their inability to move the ball had to do with TFLs by Paul, Kolby Williams (2). Landon received the punt in its own territory and moved the ball over midfield only to be forces to kick its first punt. The Saints held the ball for two plays, but a Paul Padalino strip of the ball returned the possession to the Bears.
With only 1:28 remaining until half, Landon was able to move the ball 30 yards in 7 plays. The last yard was consumed by Johari for his 4th TD @0:24. Under league rules, the clock ran out to the end of the 2nd Q.
HALFTIME BEARS 35 SAINTS 0
The visitors came out of the break with some enthusiasm and drove 60 yards in 6 plays to make it Saints 7 Bears 35 4:53 of the 3rd Q (clock ran until this score).
Landon did not lose momentum and scored again after 4 plays. Once again Johari showed his superior speed by running in, through and mostly past the SSSA defenders for a 46 yard TD @ 3:56. The PAT made it Bears 42 Saints 7 (clock ran again).
A Bear D with many clean white jerseys took the field and was able to force the Saints to relinquish the ball after 4 plays. Notable was a TFL by Justin Conner on a bubble pass. The clock indicated that the period was over.
END OF 3RD QUARTER BEARS 42 SAINTS 7
The younger Bears come on the field as the offensive unit and rushed the ball 68 yards in 6 plays. The last two yards were carried by Joey Epstein @7:33. The PAT made it Bears 49 Saints 7
