Landon Football 49 Annapolis Area Christian School 11
Initial impressions are often misleading and last night’s game at Arundel High School against the AACS Eagles proved that aphorism. Eventually, the visiting Bears showed that discipline, execution and structure are more important. The running games, which depends on those attributes, had 326 yards PLUS the defense scored two touchdowns (neither was through the normal defensive pick six!). While the home team had a poor record, the pregame warm ups showed off their size, their big time recruit and a very large marching band. Then the MIAA C team appeared to have scored on their 6th play from scrimmage—on a reverse. In what would become a pattern throughout the game, the Eagles were flagged on that play and the Bears’ D and another AACS penalty forced the home team to try and make a 31 yard field goal. EAGLES 3 BEARS 0 @ 8:13 Johari Johnson received the ensuing kickoff at his 10 yard line and returned it to midfield. Ten plays (2 runs by Andrew Mitchell, 1 run by Colton Rupp, a Kyle Hartman to Keith Simms completed pass and 5 rushes by Jamal François II)covered the half field in 3:05. The last yard was earned by the junior running back who exhibited the speed and power which were signatures of his 2012 season. Jacob Howard converted the PAT. BEARS 7 EAGLES 3@ 3:29 Mr. Howard kicked the ball off and the Eagles set up at their own 32. After the home team’s 2nd play from scrimmage, Bear DE Keith Simms caused a fumble and the Bears resumed possession only 27 yards from the goal line. Two plays and they crossed the 0 yard line. An inside reverse was the means for Dominique Seagears entry into the football promised land. The wing T and particularly an inside reverse requires timing and precise block execution; so credit should also go to the lineman (those positions were well served at some time during the game by the following Landon students—Tom Evans, Ian Dabney, Peter Millbaugh, Paul Padallino [my notes indicate that a #53 also played, but there is no such number on the roster; my error?] Steven Gee, John Slowinski, Keith Simms [#71?] , Tommy Crittenberger; others?) Jacob Howard split the uprights again—BEARS 14 EAGLES 3 @ 1:25 AACS received the kickoff and maintained possession into the next quarter. That drive was thwarted when the Eagles threw a bubble screen (usually a play difficult to defend), but the home team WR was stopped for a loss when Luke Kurtz, Brandon Johnson and Paul Padallino collectively tackled him. The remainder of the half was a series long possessions by the Bears, none successful and short Eagle offensive series. One of the AACS drives was stopped when Jacob Harris separated one of his opponents from the ball. Another termination of the home team’s was due to a tackle for loss by Tommy Crittenberger and Charlie Ellerman. Throughout the game, the Bear D played solid positional defense, attacked the ball and were frequently able to pressure the Eagle QB. Particularly impressive was the Landon DBs who were very effective against the AASC wide receiver who has offers from a number of FBS schools. The positions were “Beared” by the following boys – Andrew Mitchell, Jacob Harris, Jules Desroches, Keith Simms, Justin Cort, Brandon Johnson, Paul Padallino, Charlie Ellerman, Johari Johnson, Dominique Seagears, Bernard Akinboyewa, Rob Adkins, Tommy Crittenberger, John Slowinski, Joseph Tabb, James Killen, Greg Avedisian, Josh Hunter, Luke Kurtz, Brian Menendez, Brian MacLaury, and Will Lincoln. HALFTIME BEARS 14 EAGLES 3 During the intermission, the fans were feted to a multimedia show by the AACS marching band and a number of dancers. The music was quite good. The 3rd Q was dominated by the Bears’ O; the visitors scored on each of its first three possessions. They took the kickoff and marched 80 yards in 6 plays. The Kyle to Keith pass “Kombination” started the drive with 16 yards through the air. The remainder was on the ground—Kyle (6 yards), Dominique (10), Andrew (31), and the last two by Colton (37). #3 made his 3rd PAT to make it BEARS 21 EAGLES 3 The Bear D continued its control of the Eagles O. Paul had another TFL and then Dominique had what seemed to be a pick six, but was called back on a penalty. Landon started off at the AACS 20 and 5 runs (including one by soph Josh Hunter) resulted in the 4th Bear TD. The ball was carried from 2 yards out by Colton for the TD plus a Jacob PAT to make it BEARS 28 EAGLES 10 Another QB sack by Keith stopped the Eagles and returned the ball to the visitors. The ball was handed off to JF “deuxième” and 44 yards later he was in the end zone. Our proficient kicker converted his 5th PAT to make it BEARS 35 EAGLES 3 @4:41 The home team’s offense was disrupted by a Joseph Tabb sack and the Bears punted to end the 3rd Q BEARS 35 EAGLES 3 The home team responded, showing its potential and its junior RB ran 54 yards in one play for a TD; they made a two point PAT to make it BEARS 35 EAGLES 11 @ 10:57 of the 4th Q AACS were successful on an onsides kick, but that play was offset first when John Slowinski sacked the Eagles’ QB and then more dramatically when Landon DT Jules Desroches recovered a fumble on the fly and beat the opposing RB in a 53 yard sprint to the end zone. Jacob Howard converted to make it BEARS 32 EAGLES 11 @ 9:10. The Bears tested some of its underclassmen for the next possession and on 4th down Rob Adkins punted the ball out on the AACS 7 yard line. Four plays later, the Landon D scored its second consecutive touchdown (truly a rare phenomenon) when Tommy Crittenberger fell on an Eagles fumble in the end zone. Mr. Howard notched his 7th point to make it BEARS 49 EAGLES 11@ 3:07 Nothing of notable consequence occurred in the remaining time, thankfully. FINAL SCORE BEARS 49 EAGLES 11
