Landon Football 19 Bullis 7

This was Seniors Day, and Michelle Ming, mother of Ethan ’23 and Dameon ’20, set a new standard for celebrating the 13 members of the Class of 2023, set a new standard for thanking the parents and the Bears. The Bulldogs of Potomac, one of 3 IAC teams with this mascot, were not their normal physically bullying team. Entering with a 3-4 record and only 1-1 in IAC, the visitors wanted to demonstrate their superiority.

Wrong! BS won the toss and deferred. The Bears received the kick and senior Ethan Ming returned it 14 yards to the home 34. FIRST PLAY FROM SCRIMMAGE, senior Taylor Best took a pitch around right end and 66 yards with many broken tackles, the senior arrived in the end zone, PAT by Nico Schemer good @ 11:45

The visitors started on their own 45 and 8 plays later, punted. Bears on O three and out. BS’s drive was interrupted by SENIOR BRIAN WHITE’S TFL. Landon held the call for 6 plays (5 runs, 1 incomplete pass) and punted. The Bulldogs had another 3 and out, with Tyler returning the punt 20 yards—initiating a TD drive—8 rushes, one I and a brilliant 9 yard TD run byEthan (at least 5 broken tackles) @8:27

The next SENIOR NICO SCHERMER (who beat BS twice in soccer this year) pinned the opponents to Landon’s 26. On a key play, SENIOR OLB CHRIS WELLS, who was held on the previous play (unnoticed by the officials), knocked down a BS QB pass, forcing a punt. Landon returned the ball to the visitors on the next play, setting them up only 19 yards from their 1st score. A TFL by Brian with Chris preceded an interception by Taylor to return the ball to the Bears.

With only 0:42 on the clock, Air Bear was unveiled with 4 completions and 3 incompletions (the last a Hail Mary which bounced around the cluster of home and visitor players).

The teams returned from halftime with renewed energy. Bullis retained possession for 10 plays, stopped on a 4th down when SENIOR NATHAN ROSNER sacked the opposing QB. Landon could not cross the line-to-gain on the next series; so Bullis started close to midfield, earned a 1st down and a 4th down passe was incomplete.

The Bears started 85 yards from the goal and started off with 3 runs. Then Air Bear, led by Nathan Furgeson’s passing and a couple of nice runs covered 49 yards, the last a 16 yard run by the Bear QB @9; 39 PAT GOOD

A Bullis 3-and-OUT brought Q3 to an end

The last 12 minutes saw a number of clean Bear jerseys earn some playing time. Both teams had short possessions to wind the play clock to 2:11. Bulldogs completed a 58 yard pass for a TD, PAT good, at 1:15.

An unsuccessful onsides kick, not surprisingly caught by TAYLOR, allowed the Landon to consume the last seconds with QB-taking-a-knees
