The Huskies of Oakton started the season with two exceedingly tough away losses and they looked forward to playing the Bears on their up-to-date campus on a sunny Saturday. The visitors with two wins had 10 players with jerseys, but no pads.
The first half drew a blank, 0-0 at half- collectively 11 incomplete passes, three interceptions, four TFLs, a fumble, a fake punt and a blocked punt.
Q3 started off with a bang- the Huskies drove 66 yards in 6 plays (including 2 pass completions. PAT shanked.
The Bears responded- on its first real play from scrimmage—QB MAX MURRAY connected with Sophomore WR EMMANEUL COLEMAN, on a great catch, for a 65 yard TD, PAT good @7:08
The remaining minutes of this quarter saw the Bear D assert its capabilities- TFLs by LB MATT ROSNER and DE NICK DAVIDOFF and 3 passes defended by Soph Willard Freeman!!!
To start the last stanza, Senior WR/RB ROBERT SWIFT took a pitch, accelerated around the left end, was greeted by a pack of Huskies, dodged/deeked/spun/ran over them and 63 yards later he was mobbed in THE END ZONE by the Bear linemen who had blocked at the line of scrimmage, downfield and at the goal line. The scoring celebration (?refs never announced what/why?) moved the kick back. The PAT kick turned into a pitch by the holder to QB Max who connected with Emmanuel for 2 points, or so it was thought. The scoreboard was revised to show a 13-6 score @ 10:36 of Q4. No announcement of why the change.
The Bear O prioritized ball control, eating up the clock. Flint Hill’s ensuing possessions were frustrated by Nick’s quarterback hurry, Key pass break-ups by Senior DB DOMINIC JENKINS and WILLARD stopped FH’s momentum. The visiting offense consumed three minutes only to return the ball to the Oakton boys. First play of their final series. All-purpose MATT intercepted the spheroid on a diving catch. Bears had to kill 3:55 to seal their 3rd consecutive win, but their forward progress limited, a punt was attempted. It floated down in the FH end and the player catching it was met by a number of Bears—FUMBLE and Junior OL/DL WADE POLK emerged from the scrum with the pigskin. Three plays and the victory was finally secure.
FINAL SCORE BEARS 13 HUSKIES 6
