The 12-3 BearsBB team ventured out to the Bullis Potomac campus on the same court on which the home Bulldogs beat Episcopal High School; the result was a Landon victory 57-45. The Bear icemen at the Bears Den, almost due East of the Bulldogshome, beat their IAC/MAPHL for 11-0. [That story will be posted later]

The home team’s student section was clad in all white and that was the color of the Bullis scoresheetthrough the first 4 minutes of the game, the Bulldogs [isn’t it odd that of the six team IAC,  three teams have this drooling dog as their mascot and all of them have blue as their primary color?] scored its 1st bucket at 3:37.

The Bear D was formidable; the Landon O saw buckets by Deion Wellington(8 points for the night) and Chris Hudnut(3 hoops)(18 points, the visitors leading scorer) had given them a small early margin. Despite raucous, clever cheering by the fashionably late arriving Men of the Bear cheering section, he Landon two leading scorers were shut out for these eight minutes by an aggressive Bulldog D that surrounded Joe McDonald and Darion Atkins, focused their defensive responsibilities and collapsed their players on them. Jonathan Tshibuy (Montreal Canada, 15 points for the night) and his teammates had found the range. END OF 1ST Q LANDON 11 BULLIS 10

The Bullis BB players fought hard and ran thier offense, the big swingman would drive the lane, shoot or kick it out to his wings. By 2:28, they had scratched a 5 point lead, 22-17. Foul shots and a two pointer by Tim Hetterman (7 points) and another hoop by Co-Captain Chris brought the HALFTIME MARGIN TO BULLIS 25 LANDON 23

That differential did grow to 5 points at 5:47 of the 3rd Q, A Darion Atkinsblock and his drawing of a foul from the Bullis team changed the momentum. Scoring in this quarter came from Deion, Darion (10 points for the game), Tim, Chris and Joe McDonald (16 points game total).END OF 3RD Q LANDON 39 BULLIS 39

The character of the Bears was shown in the last eight minute segment:

  • the first Bullis play was unsucessful in altering thier inside shot

  • a Darion block at7:05

  • Chris drawing a foul and sinking both of his free throws

  • a clutch Deion jumper to give the Bears a 45-40 lead at 5:56

  • two free throws by big #12

  • Joe hitting a BIG 3 at 3:01, Bears 50-Bulldogs at 3:01

  • two more Joe jumpers with a Darion bucket in between

  • three consecutive free throw by Joe

It didn’t hurt that the home team missed 7 consecutive free throws and they made 4 of their 16 shots from the charity stripe. The Bears were not exemplary there either hitting only 14 of a potential 33.
