Thursday’s trip out Rockville Pike was not memorable—the score was tight through 24 minutes, but the Little Hoyas tallied 5 consecutive goals in Q3 on the way to a +6 victory. That is not consistent with the history of this series—over the past five years the average difference has been 2.8 with the 2017 outlier of a Bears +7 win.
Bordley Stadium at Triplett Field, the site for game #2, saw a close opening period. Prep’s Notre Dame bound player goaled 1st at 9:37. Landon Sells opened the Bears scoring @ 8:39 with a midfield sweep. The visitors replied at 8:19. The home team closed out Q1 with a Graham Hertzberg blast @3:31 plus Zak Oehlerking beating the Little Hoyas goalie @ 1:54.
END OF Q1 BEARS 3 LITTLE HOYAS 3
The next period was a reminder of Thursday’s Q3 with Prep scored a quintuplet. (4 by the future Golden Domer)
HALFTIME BEARS 3 LITTLE HOYAS 8
This section of the game, in contrast with 2 days ago, was relatively quiet. The not so Little Hoyas added to their advantage at 4:53. The +1 margin was removed by a Bears EMO goal—Cameron Brown from Zak @ 0:21.
END OF Q3 BEARS 4 LITTLE HOYAS 9
Here’s where the Haywood Hale Brun’s aft-quoted line “Sports do not build character. They reveal it” is applicable. Down by 5 the Bears responded repeatedly. Five consecutive home goals-starting with a GP clear that failed and the ball ended in Kevin Miller’s stick who beat the GP goalie @10:50. The momentum continued as Graham scored his second @10:07 obviously after a successful Nicholas #19 Kopp win at X.
Hunter Taylor’s 13 saves (maybe more) kept the Bears close throughout the game. This period’s energy was aided by key sparks by Caused Turnovers by Zak, Anthony Panetti, Nico Schermer, Cullen Brown, Sebastian Fischbach, Jake Cohen and Will Cohen.
The scoring parade continued—Cameron @5:11, Graham @ 3:57 and Cameron @ 3:21. After being down by 5, Landon’s character was clear in tying it 9-9.
An incredible play by GP #28, a D/LSM (a former M), who anticipated a pass, intercepted it, ran the length of the field and scored at 2:04.
FINAL SCORE BEARS 9 LITTLE HOYAS 10
The lacrosse team has honored a Bear, Khari Baten, because his exemplary life deserves emulation by those still within the White Rocks.
The KB, THAT’S A BEAR award, goes to Cameron Brown.
