Landon 7 the Hun School 2 in ice hockey
The Bears, #1 in the DMV area, used to measure its relative strength by playing the Hun School of Princeton, NY. Historically, if the Landon team beat the Raiders from the North by any margin was an indicator of how well the Brown & White team was developing. Based on this game. the home team deserves its #1 rank.
The Bears received a 2 minute penalty for having SIX skaters on the ice in the second period. It was a call by a VERY observant referee because it seemed as though the swarming Bears outnumbered their opponents for all of the game. Every time the visiting Hun skaters would get the puck on their sticks, a Bear forward of defensemen would remove it, pass it to a teammate and crash towards the Raider net, For extended blocks of minutes, the play was in the Bear O zone; quick passes in tight spaces constantly created shots which the visitors’ Goalie absorbed, caught or watched as they hit the back of the net. It was a demonstration of incredible puck handling on O, skating everywhere and stick work that created equal parts of steals and of O opportunities.
The first goal was scored by Captain San Anas off of assists from Matt Potolicchio and Matt Opsahl. The home team took advantage of an early powerplay at 12:21 of the first period.Four minutes later Graham Shue beat the Raider goalie off of an assist from Joel Rosenzweig making it Landon 2 Hun 0. With 2:19 remaining, Matt Opsahl, playing inspired hockey, scored the Bears’ 3rd goal with help from Teddy Wellington and Sam Anas, The Raiders got thier first goal with 37.3 seconds remaining until the first intermission. END OF 1ST PERIOD :LANDON 3 HUN 1
The second 15 minute period was marked by Bears’ demonstrating incredible control of the puck. Even when the home team was playing with one less skater , the action was in front of the Hun goalie. The results of all of this Bear effort were shown on the scoreboard between 3:59 and 0:00 of this period. First, Teddy Wellington scored on a pass from Matt Potolicchio. Then Graham Shue had his second score with help from Sam Anas. To bring the period to an end, Matt Potolicchio took the puck on his backhand to the right of the goalie and placed the puck past the Hun goalie, near side, over the G’s shoulder and under the cross bar. The film of that goal should be on Sports Center or You Tube!!! END OF 2ND PERIOD : LANDON 6 HUN 1
To begin the last period, one of the Bears spent two minutes in the penalty box and the short handed Bears’ defenders spent most of that time skating near the Raider goal. The equity police put another Landon player in isolation at 12:19 and again the Huns had no success. Finally, the two many men bench minor (mentioned in the introduction paragraph) was assessed at 10:05 for Hun naught.. Once again, Assistant Captain Teddy Wellington scored to make it 7-1 and this tally was on an assist from Max Greenwald. With seconds remaining, the Raiders got their second goal,
FINAL SCORE LANDON 7 HUN 2
Sam Kroll had 14 saves.
