Landon 6 defeats Gilman 5 on 4/3 (A)

5 min read

The Bears traveled to Baltimore to play one of the MIAA’s most prestigious teams, Gilman, a team that Coach Bordley had never defeated in Baltimore over the 30 years of games at the  Roland Park campus. Today in a hotly contested, physical battle, the Bears prevailed 6-5.

Down 0-1 in the 1st Q, Sophomore Charlie Schnider has an unassisted goal at 5:22.  Junior Will Laco took a pass from Senior Will Korengold to put the Bears up 2-1. The Greyhounds responded with a 2 goal run, but scores by Joe Paoletta, off an assist from Matt Opsahland then Junior Pearce Minshall, from a pass from Matt Opsahl, put the Bears ahead 4-3 at the half.

The 3rd Q saw the home tie it up again and then Patrick Keena give the Bears a 5-4 lead going into the last period. The Greyhounds converted an extra man opportunity to make the score 5-5 early, but the winning goal (his second score of the day) was scored by Joe Paoletta with 4 minutes remaining. Several offensive rushes by the Greyhounds were frustrated by the goalie and his buddies on defense/

This last thought suggests THE  key reason for the Landon victory– Will Joyce made 17 saves against some big time Greyhound sharp shooters. He was aided by the stout defense (Ds, LSMs and SSDs) — many take aways, good bodying of the Gilman attack as they drove to the goal, aggressive ground balls (28 total for the day). The Xmen (Justin Murphy and Wes Lincoln)were effective winning 10 of 13 face offs.

An impressive victory and one that clearly pleased Coach Bordley.

BEAR GREATS

This is the first in a series of Bears who have graduated and performed at a level of excellence that reflects well on their Landon days and Coach Bordley. Today’s “column” is an interview withRyan Curtis, Landon 1996, is now the head coach at the University of Vermont.

Coach  Curtis was the first Bear to achieve the status of NCAA Defenseman of the Year in 1999; he also won a national championship with the Cavaliers that year. He was named a First Team NCAA All-American twice and was named the 1999 NCAA Defenseman of the Year. Curtis was also a two-time captain at UVA and was named to the 50th Anniversary All-ACC Team. At the pro level, he had an eight year career in the MLL during which he was named a MLL All-Star five times and  the MLL Defensive Player of the Year in 2003. He was also named the Cannons’ MVP on three occasions and was a three-time captain in Boston.

Q:I suspect that your Dad and Coach Bordley have each had major impacts on your lacrosse career. Share some thoughts how each of them have influenced your play at UVa and now your coaching at UVM?

A:The one thing they both shared was an intolerance to anything other than full effort. It didn’t matter if you were winning, losing, having a bad game or playing great; if you took a play off, you heard about it. Coach B demanded the best out of everyone, and my dad always told me there was no point in doing anything if you weren’t willing to work harder than everyone else. This was the basis of everything I did as a player and now as a coach. Now that my playing career is over, I can look back on it and know that, no matter what, I always gave it everything I had.

Q:Do you remember the “stripping” of ’88 star Mike Banks when he was a senior and you were in MS? Toby Murdock ’88 and Mike came home that night in disbelief.

A:I don’t remember that so much as being terrified every time the varsity came out to practice as the MS team was finishing up. As soon as they were within earshot, Coach B would start telling Mike or Todd Eichelberger ’89 that I was talking smack about them, which I never did, and then would make me do 1v1’s with them while everyone watched.

Q: Your career at Landon involved a number of notable hits, one in particular against StA where you hit a middie legally, but the ref (probably Tommy Sheckles, was so shocked by the impact that he called a foul. Did you agree with the call?

A:Officials and I have never seen eye to eye… I remember a hit one time in middle school and they ref telling me I couldn’t hit people like that until I was in high school, I never understood that. I think it was a style that worked for me; my goal was always to make the guy I covered not want the ball by the end of the game.

FUTURE GUESTS– TAYLOR SIMMERS, 1990, 1ST LANDON AA and MATT WARD, 2002, 1ST LANDON Offensive Player of the Year

If someone believes that a player or group (offense/defense; middies/attack/ LSMs/close defense/goalies/FOGO/coaches/manager/ etc.) should receive greater attention, I am open to such suggestions. I will not mention referees at any time and will limit references to the opposition.(d) that BSN is a volunteer publication and that as the editor, publisher, statistician and writer [me], I am all too fallible and I apologize in advance for any error.
