Landon 16 St. John’s 10
Lacrosse practices under Coach Bordley are arduous and spirited. At the end of a typical “lesson” on the field, the boys are mentally and physically exhausted. No one plays soft, but it’s unlikely that a Bear will unload against a brother.
Getting ready for more IAC games, it is a lot tougher test to schedule St. John’s College High School than hold another practice. The Cadets are a solid 10-5, have three Div. recruits (2 to play for Landon Alum Ryan Curtis at UVM) and include two younger brothers of current Bear talent (Falcone and Fellows). Coach Phillips is building a strong program and is instilling discipline in his players. They Cadets tested the Bears, but fell 16-10.
The game was played on Goddard Field being displaced by a massive, multi school, coeducational track meet.
The first period was all Bears—Colton Rupp picked up a ground ball around the crease, was driven into the ground (ice?) and scored @ 10:38; then Sam Lynch inverted, beat his man and passed to SeanO’Brien @9:50; Robby Dunigan assisted on a goal by Garrett Fellows @ 5:43; Austin Petty bull dodged his way to his 1st goal of the game @ 5:11; Sam Lynch found Jack Bolen who scored his 1st goal of the game @ 3:41; Zach Buller fired his 1st goal of the game @ 1:27to make it Bears 6 Cadets 1.{all three of the 1st goals were noted as such because each of them eventually scored three goals by the end of their day’s work}.
Interspersed in the Landon scoring was a good ride by the visitors causing a turnover which quickly resulted in an empty net goal at 7:01 of the first period.
END OF 1ST Q: BEARS 6 CADETS 1
The SJCHS players showed their ability with a nice assisted goal at 10:52 of this next stanza. The Landon team responded with four straight scores—an EMO tally on an assist by Sam Lynch to Zach @ 7:37; an unassisted score by Garrett @ 6:45; an unassisted goal by Zach @ 5:23; and a nice assist from Woody Axelson to Jack Bolen @ 2:10. The Cadets had the last entry on the scoreboard at 1:39 on a shot by a D on great clearing play.
HALFTIME BEARS 10 CADETS 3
As early as midway through the 2nd period, a number of Bears, who had not accumulated as much playing time as they would have preferred, were matched against the Cadets first string. The Bears’ starters were able to rest a bit more than usual. As many as ten underutilized defenders, seven fresh midfielders, four excited attackmen and a much beloved goalie played significant minutes. For many of them, these experiences will be the basis for confidence in the coming years as they move forward in the roster.
The visitors demonstrated their resilience and scored two quick goals at the beginning of the 3rd period at 11:15 and 11:01. The Bear D refocused and shut off their opponents for the next eight minutes, in part because their O teammates controlled the ball. Austin scored his second and third goals consecutively @ 10:29 and then @ 9:39. Sean showed a Canadian side to his game, ducking under and through the defenders using one hand and scoring @7:04. Younger Bears connected for a goal @ 5:16 as Rob Adkins fed Sam Offutt for goal #14.The Cadets did not give up and responded with goals at 3:50, 2:56 (an EMO score) and 2:44.
END OF 3RD Q BEARS 14 CADETS 8
SJCHS kept coming putting their ninth and tenth scores, but the Bears did not back down. Woody fed Jack Bolen (his 3rd goal) @ 2:49 and Woody hit the net for the Bears sixteenth goal @ 2:06.
