LANDON 15 SAINT STEPHEN’S & SAINT AGNES 14

4 min read

Landon faced a vastly improved SSSA team on Alumni Reunions weekend. It was also a day on which the school celebrated the life of one of the school’s most beloved teachers. The Saints are good with Penn recruit, Darius Manora, and talented Soph QB, Ish Seisay; the lopsided loss to Bullis last week was a bit of an anomaly. The visitors wanted to redeem itself and the Bears winning score of   15-14 was a good home team victory and a good showing by the Saints.

The visitors won the toss and chose to defer; Landon received the kick. An incomplete pass and a fumble recovered by the Bears forced the Bears to punt. The Saint started out on their 32 and drove 78 yards in 11 plays. Manora ran the final 7 yards to bring the score to SAINTS 7 BEARS 0 @ 6:04 OF 1ST Q.

The Bears responded in like kind, taking possession on their own40 and driving 60 yards in 8 plays- 4 runs by Myles Allen and 3 by Jamal François, the last 8 yards by Myles @ 2:26 remaining in the first quarter. The PAT attempt byMatt Underhillwas blocked by a very fast SSSA DB who flew around the corner. BEARS 6 SAINTS 7

The Saints ran 3 plays and punted. The Bears had the ball for 6 plays and moved it 14 yards as well as pushing the clock into the 2nd Q.

A long drive by SSSA resulted in a punt and was followed by Bears long drive highlighted by a spectacular 76 yard TD run byMyles Allen@6:01 The same SSSA DB made a block of the PAT. BEARS 12 SAINTS 7

The Saints possessed the ball for 13 plays, but the Bears did not break, forcing a SSSA punt with 0:54 until halftime. The ball was dangerously downed on the Bears 1 yard line, creating aspirations among the Saints of a safety. A run by Myles destroyed that hope and the Bears ran out the clock.

HALFTIME BEARS 12 SAINTS 7

The Saints received the kickoff and drove the ball 65 yards in 18 plays. Manora ran 5 times, Seisay ran 5 times and he passed 4 times including the 5 yard TD. PAT good. At 3:51 remaining in the 3rd Q SAINTS 14 BEARS 12

The Bears took the ball 59 yards in 10 plays. The highlight was a slashing, dashing 54 yard run by Myles. The Bear possession took the clock into the 4th Q and resulted in a successful 23 yard field goal by Matt Underhill(who had played 81 minutes in the Friday soccer match against SSSA) @11:06 BEARS 15 SSSA 14

The Bears D faced a talented Saints O with plenty of time for the visitors to score. The Bears defenders included Jackson Howard, Jules Desroches, Kolby Williams, PJ Fitzgerald, Obai Kamara, Will Buckingham, Andrew Mitchell,Austin Petty,  Taylor Trumbower, Mike Rhoads, David Spiritos, Jack Falk, Connor Lynch, Peter Laco, Robbie Dunnigan, Anthony Fullum, Bernard Akinboyewa, Brandon Johnson, Dominique Seagears, Jamal Françoisand others I am sure.  This was a test between a set of confidant Saints and a determined, hard working band of Bear brothers. Thirteen plays, 50 yards and five minutes later, the forward progress of the visitors was arrested. The SSSA kicker ran onto the field to attempt a 32 yard FG; the ball was well wide. Landon held the Saints from a damaging scoring opportunity—THAT’S A BEAR.

The game was not over; a stout defense by SSSA and they might have another chance to erase the 1 point differential. The Landon O line showed its character; these stalwarts included over the 4 periods—Austin Petty, Obai Kamara, David Spiritos, Will Buckingham, Mike Rallo, Will Murty, Jackson Howardand others. This mature group, all but one are seniors, exhibited a high level of tenacity over the remaining 12 plays, 6 minutes and almost 70 yards. Every play the SSSA boys fired out, only to be blunted by one or more Bear blockers; the Saints grabbed for the ball, but were unable to dislodge from home team players’ forearms; and were helpless as the ball moved to 1 yard from a touchdown. AKyle Hartmanto Myles Allen pass completion, a 47 yard run by Jamaland aKyletoAustin Petty pass removed any doubt as to the outcome. Coach Padalino exhibited considerable class by having the game end in 3 QB taking a knee to kill the clock.
