Landon 11 St. Mary’s 10 in Overtime

The Bears traveled to Annapolis to play the highly regarded St Mary’s Saints. The Bears left the field having shown that this team has character.

Down 10-6 in the 4thQ, the Bears roared back with tough defense and 4 critical goals to tie the Saints with less than a minute left in the last quarter. In the last minutes of the game, Joe Paoletta helped push StM #21 out-of-bounds, causing the critical turnover. Then he raced down the field, got a pass, drove down the right side and from a wicked angle nailed the tying goal with seconds left!!!

Not happy with having pushed the 3-0 Saints to overtime, the Bears fought for the faceoff ball and out of the scrum came a charging Luke Howard down the field and to the goal where the defenseman fired the winning goal!!!

To get to this point the Bears had to do 2 things—score and play defense.

DEFENSE

StM has a number of talented offensive players (several listed as going to Division 1 schools), but the most impressive was a 6’4” middie[#21] (18G, 14A in 2009) who is going to play lacrosse and football at UNC. LSMs Kiel Weigmann, Sam McDonough, Jack Findaro, many sliding Ds and a large number of supporting middies kept their sticks in the gloves of #21 (causing him to “ward” many times, but rarely called). Justin Murphy faceoffed 21 times, won 12, many of those battles at the X against #21. Luke Howard had 7GBs including the one if the OT.

A hard-fought game, well-played and well deserved win for the Bears.

Next game – Tuesday 3/23 4:15pm home versus Bishop Spaulding
