End of Season Hockey Notes and Bears MS Track team places 2nd in 6 school meet
Notes from the Hockey Dinner Celebrating the 25-0-1 #1 Ranked Season
Coach Gammill thanked the Captains Moms- Sara Russell, Deme Anas and Kathy Wellington for all that they did for the boys, the coaches and the fans all season long and expressed appreciation for the Wellingtons to allow the Bears to come into Kathy’s and Tracy’s home {NOTE–the Habid Carpets/Bruce Boudreau ad in which Mrs. Boudreau questions the Coach about getting new friends must have been replicated some time before or after the dinner.}
Chandler was then profuse in his praise of his fellow Coaches- Anas, Lubin and Franstrom and asked each of them to share some of their perspectives on the season. Coach Kathleen Lubin spoke about hard work at practices and about academic performance thrpoghout the season. Coach Hans Farnstrom- exclaimed that a 25-0-1 record was awesome and teh success was attributable to chemistry and senior leadership. He recited the Bears’ hockey history, recalling the first Maryland hockey championship against DeMatha and them mentioning the current Stag coach’s appreciation of Landon’s success and the future.
Coach G said that the night is about the seniors. But first mentioned generically the substantial of all the underclassmen. He recounted some humorous moments during the season. He then traced the history of the season– early wins, the Westchester tournament victories- too easy. Then pointing to IAC and MAPHL title. Coach G repeated the coaching mantra that losses are good teaching opportunities, but there were no losses. Perhaps the Archbishop Spalding tie contributed to the crushing of GP in IAC championship. At the beginning, the team set 4 goals- MAPHL, IAC, Westchester and perfection. Coming into the MAPHL championship, there was some nervousness about DM, but then the scores @ :08 and them @ 13:52, the angst evaporated. Perhaps one of the strongest snapshots of the season was the Bear players flocking to Landon crowd.
Then Coach Gammill announced the two most important outside awards, given by the Washington Post–
1st team ALL Met–Matt Potolicchio
Player of the Year –Sam Anas.
Every aspect of team was covered. G, D and Wings- all played well every game.
He then enumerated some of the reasons why these Seniors were so special-
Matt Coster– Coach remembered with considerable pain receiving an email about Matt’s injury; Mr. Gammill said that it “crushed me”. It was important to get Matt on ice for even for only 0:20. Closing comment “See you at the next alumni hockey game”.
Greg Russell– also injured (groin). This Assistant Captain was missed on ice, but he never missed for leadership. Greg always had good insights and advice abou strategy and tactics. See you @ 2011 alum game.
Pearce Minshall– His dedication to the team was demonstrated by an Xmas practice in which Pearce practice his quick release shot until he hurt. Great humor at right times and a needed physical presence, particularly against the Stags in the MAPHL championship match.
Teddy Wellington– The true measure of a Captain’s leadership is his placing of the team’s need ahead of his personal goals.Teddy played from the place where he was needed most. He probably could have more markers in the score ledger, but his contributions to this team were better measured by the W’s accumulated at the end of the schedule!
Sam Anas– the Coach recalled a series of actual, but incredibly symbollic moments in Sam’s career at Landon. During his 8th grade year, Sam handed Coach G an Alex Ovechkin pin. At the beginning of the 2010-2011 schedule, Mr. Gammill gave the Great 8 pin to Sam and said to his Captain to emulate the excellence of the Caps’#8. “He did. Well done.” summarized Coach Gammill of Sam’s performance.
Gave out IAC/MAPHLChampionship Patches to all of the teammates.
Coaches Award– did all that was asked of him. Worked hard. Played within him self consummate team player. PEARCE MINSHALL.
Most Valuable Player Award– every phase of the game–O and D, extra or down- Sam Anas
Fishman Award (Coach Farnstrom related teh background of this special award–Brian played ’89 street hockey and upon graduation was deeply involved in the University of Wisconsin hockey and after 4 years at Madisn, WI was an employee of USA Hockey); his parents endowed an award that recognizes Determination, integrity and enthusiasm– the recipient was Teddy Wellington
Coach Gammill said that on Paper, 2011-2012 could be as good as the preceding year. Depends on the effort and to set the direction in terms of leadership, he named the 2011-2012 leadership:
A- Conor Meike,
A- Matt Opsahl.
C- Matt Potolicchio
The 10-11 captains then distributed very thoughtful and much appreciated gifts to the Captains’ Moms, the Senior Moms and the coaches.
GO BEARS!!
