Early Preseason — notes about coaches and the football opponents
As the boys run around the fields or swim in the pool, it is worthwhile to note that the adults who devote substantial time as coaches/mentors/teachers are tremendous assets to the growth of the Bears in their athletic, academic and community development. A few examples of this Fall’s coaches will reinforce that point:
Bill Reed, the varsity soccer coach, is the Positive Coaching Alliance 2012 Double-Goal Coach ® award in recognition of his leadership in all dimensions of the boys’ lives (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_EocFDoQ8Y)
The varsity football team benefits from the knowledge and wisdom of eight excellent men, three of whom have held the position of high school head coaches and at least one was on the staff of a college team. Head Coach Padalino was a very successful prep school coach and then chose to try the AD job there. When the Landon position opened up, he realized that he wanted to return to the field; he missed directly working with the boys. Assistant Coach Holm, in addition to being a very capable Athletic Director for the Bears, was asked by USA Football Team to coach the line backers on the U15 and U19 teams at the World Football Festival.
Kicking is a highly specialized skill, and the Bears are benefitting with some college player assistance to Coach Farnstrom. Will Snyderwine, Landon 2007, went to Duke University based on his academic skills and walked on as the ACC school’s placekicker (see http://bearsportsnews.wordpress.com/2011/08/23/landons-will-snyderwine-featured-in-dukes-economics-department-article/) . There he won awards, was included on the watch list for the Lou Groza Award and earned a scholarship which allowed him to earn his Masters in Economics. Will is on his way to teaching at an English prep school and coaching the U14 rugby team there (Mr. Snyderwine was a member of the US Rugby team). Before leaving for the UK, Will stopped by to help Coach Farnstrom instruct the two Bear kickers on the finer points of their skill set (white tee shirt below is Will; Coach Farnstrom is in the gray tee shirt and the wearer of the brown tee shirt and hat is Will’s Dad, who is the US National Rugby team coach.):

Speight reclassifies, jumpstarts recruitment
SPEIGHT 2
Collegiate quarterback Wilton Speight missed most of last season with an injury, but has been reclassified so he has another junior year to impress college coaches. Times-Dispatch Published: August 18, 2012 Updated: August 18, 2012 – 12:00 AM
RICHMOND, Va. —
Speight reclassifies, being recruited again
When Wilton Speight broke his collarbone last September and missed most of his junior season – the most important year in a player’s recruitment – college coaches turned away from the Collegiate quarterback.
“They moved on to other guys in my grade, which made sense,” Speight said.
Speight faced a dilemma – repeat his junior year or forgo his dream of playing high-level Division I football. So Speight requested that he reclassify, and Collegiate obliged. Now the schools that had been recruiting him, some from the ACC and SEC, have Speight back on their radar.
“As soon as I reclassed, everyone kind of came back on board,” he said. “I kind of hit the reset button.”
The 6-foot-6, 229-pound pocket passer doesn’t have any offers yet. Many coaches want to see how his season starts, he said.
In the summer, Speight had the opportunity to travel to Los Angeles and train with 25 other young quarterbacks under former NFL player Kurt Warner. Warner shared his story with them, explaining how he had setbacks of his own. Warner bagged groceries and played in Europe before making it to the NFL.
“I’m a believer that God has a plan for everybody, and everything happens for a reason,” Speight said. “I think this did happen for a reason.”
