Lots of interesting Bear activity in three sports; special thanks to John Nichols for his encyclopedic report on lacrosse.

Hockey

Max Greenwald played in Middlebury’s losses to Norwich Cadets (1-3) and Plattsburgh Cardinals (1-7).

Sam Anas, the Youngstown Phantom’s #3 scorer, played in the win against the Chicago Steel. Last night he had 2 goals in a 5-2 win against the Lincoln Stars.

Matt Coster, Cornell Hockey Club, has played in all 15 of the Big Red’s games and has accumulated 8 penalty minutes.

Mike Anderson, Princeton Hockey Club, has played in 15 games, has 2 goals and 10 assists with 30 minutes in the penalty box (leading the team in this statistic).

Hoops

Christian Webster of Harvard played in a 75-65 win over the Big Green over Dartmouth; as a starter he played 35 minutes with 1 rebound, 1 assist, 2 steals and 1 block.

Danny Rubin of BC played in the Eagles 86-75 victory over the Hokies of Va Tech at Blacksburg.

Darion Atkins of UVa started against the Demon Deacons of WF (a 55-52 loss) for 16 minutes with 2 points and 2 rebounds. Against the Tigers of Clemson, he started, recorded 15 minutes, with 2 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist and 1 block. Against the Tigers of Clemson, he started, played 15 minutes, scored 2, 1 rebound, 2 assists and 1 block.

Joe McDonald of GWU started played 25 minutes, 2 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists in the Colonials win over St. Bonaventure (team mascots that are only a variation on the school’s name does not merit mentioning). He started, played 28 minutes, scored 8 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists in a 71-56 loss to the Musketeers of Xavier.

Chris Hudnut of the Colby Mules, quoting the school’s website, “made his first collegiate New England Small College Athletic Conference game one he will not forget after posting game-highs of 25 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Colby College men’s basketball team to a 69-65 win over [Continentals{a fav nickname} of]Hamilton College on Sunday at Wadsworth Gymnasium…Hudnut, a 6-foot-8 first-year center, shot 9-for-12 from the field and made all three of his 3-point field goal attempts.” Against the Bobcats of Bates, the Bear alumnus had 9 points, 7 rebounds and 1 assist in 16 minutes.

More news about Chris from the Colby Website—

“Colby College center Chris Hudnut (Lawrenceville[SIC-LANDON]/Chevy Chase, Md.), who averaged 18.7 points in three games last week, was named the Maine Men’s Basketball Coaches and Writers Association Rookie of the Week on Wednesday…..Hudnut earned the Maine Rookie of the Week honor for the second time this season. Colby teammate Luke Westman also was honored this year.…………………………Hudnut leads Colby in scoring (12.7), 3-point field goal percentage (.409), and blocked shots (8). He also is second in rebounding (5.6).”

Bear Lax Trax Fax—Pre Season Review by John Nichols

It’s hard to believe, but the first face-off for the 2013 lacrosse season is just 4 weeks away.  This likely frigid first weekend will feature the first Bears vs. Bears game as Duke (Josh Offit) hosts Denver (Harrison Archer).  That day, other Bears will be in action as Bucknell (Sam McDonough) travels to Delaware and Navy (Patrick Keena and Matt Morrison) hosts VMI.

The 2013 season features two new teams to cover:

  • ·Marquette (Cullen Cassidy)—begins its inaugural season on February 23 in a Bears vs. Bears match. The Golden Eagles travel to Columbus, Ohio to face Ohio State (Luke Howard and Charlie Schneider).

  • ·Drexel (Hank Brown) opens its 2013 campaign at UVA on February 16.

A couple of teams drop out of our coverage:

  • ·North Carolina saw Will “Boom” Leighton-Armah end his collegiate career after his junior season

  • ·Tufts lost two Landon alums, Nick Rhoads and Mark Findaro, to graduation

  • ·Sewanee lost Drew Hayhurst to the siren song of Ole Miss ()

  • ·Will Raul hung up the cleats at Washington and Lee

  • ·Tommy Minkler of Ohio Wesleyan will sit out the 2013 campaign after suffering a knee injury in the fall.

The 2013 season features 21 Bears vs. Bears games in D-I, ranging from the first to the last games of the regular season.  All told, Landon Bears will be on the field for 189 regular season games in D-I.  The D-III picture is more limited with

  • ·Gettysburg (Wes Lincoln)

  • ·Trinity (Sam Lamson)

  • ·Hamilton (Sellers Garrett) and

  • ·Dickinson (Marek Laco and Austin Dodson)

the only D-III teams with Bears on the field this year, but as conference rivals, there will be a Bears vs. Bears match up.

There will be lots of good games in the greater DC area this spring.  In addition to the close-by home games for Maryland (Miller), Georgetown (Joyce) , and Navy, Bear lax fans can see alums in action at the following games:

  • ·February 16, Drexel (Brown) @ UVA

  • ·March 1, Princeton (Strabo, Strabo, Reilly and Murphy) @ Johns Hopkins

  • ·March 9, Cornell (Joyce and Paoletta) @ UVA

  • ·March 16, Ohio State (Howard and Schneider) @ UVA

  • ·April 13, Denver (Archer) @ Loyola

  • ·April 20, Hobart (Chakola) @ Loyola

There are some interesting rule changes in place this year.  The one that is likely to catch most of the attention is the non-shot-clock shot clock.  After a stall warning is called, the offensive team will have 30 seconds to put a shot on goal.  There are a bunch of important details around this rule, but clearly there is a movement to actively discourage ball holding tactics by the offense.  Also,  the horn on a ball that goes out of bounds on the sideline and the goalie’s 5 seconds time to get back in goal are now things of the past.  In sum, the rules will likely result in faster paced, higher scoring games.
