Transitional periods create gaps in the Sunday Editions. Many of the Bears at 6101 Wilson are recovering from their Fall sports and getting ready for exams. Varsity teams are in the early stages of preparation for their 2023 schedules- little to report. The college Bears are well into their early schedules.

Following in the steps of my History Department colleagues is my first postgame recap for Varsity Hockey.
With only two practices and a couple of tryout sessions under our belt, the boys had to enroll in a crash course of new systems, habits, and concepts before a tune-up game against one of the better public-school teams in Montgomery County. While we outshot Whitman 17-2 in the first period, the boys showed some nerves in their passes and regroups, particularly with seven players making their Varsity debuts. Whitman’s goalie stoned us in the first period, who was aided by some hit posts and shots right into his chest without net-front traffic.
After shifting into a new gear and winning some more puck battles in front of the offensive net, the boys broke it open by cashing in on some greasy goals. The Bears were up 5-0 approaching the end of the second period, when a frustrated (and tired) Whitman team went on a run of penalties. The Bears were able to capitalize on three straight power play goals to quickly shift the game to 8-0 and running clock early in the third period. A couple of garbage time goals stretched the game to 10-0, as we outshot the Vikings 53-5.
The scoresheet was colorful, as NINE (!!!) different Bears put the puck in the net. Shoutouts to Graham Haberl (1 G, 3 A), Owen Calderone (2 G), and four first-time Varsity goal scorers: Christian Daymude,Quinn Coughlan, Christian Binner, and Declan Jamberdino. Daymude was awarded the post-win Landon Hardhat (showcasing the most consistent work ethic), while Coughlan was awarded with the inaugural “Top Gun” baseball cap and aviators. The “Top Gun” is one of the team’s ways to honor Mark Butler, who had signed on to come coach with me at Landon before he passed away from an unexpected illness in May. While Mark was not technically a Top Gun (he’d be rolling his eyes at me for associating the movie with his flying career), he did achieve the rank of Colonel in the Marine Corps as a Harrier Pilot and Chief of Staff for Cyberspace Command. The “Top Gun” is given to the player who best exemplified the values of the Marines throughout the course of a victory: Honor, Courage, Commitment.
We’ll enjoy the holiday break before a busy first week of December, with a non-league game against Prep and then our first MAPHL game against Bishop O’Connell.
