Landon Takes Second at the Lake Forest Cross Country Festival
Felton Delaware
September 6, 2014
By Thomas Drescher
Landon cross country enjoyed a successful day of racing at the Lake Forest Cross Country Festival in Felton, Delaware, despite oppressive weather conditions. More than 40 Bears made the long trip to Killens Pond State Park after a grueling week of training, and the team enjoyed standout performances from a host of runners.
The varsity squad outpaced 16 other teams, finishing second overall as McDonogh put three runners in the top four and ran away with first place. Two Landon runners earned top-15 medalist honors: Junior Captain Ben Gilbert (9th) and sophomore rookie Wesley Feldman (14th), whose extraordinary performance has altered the fortunes of the varsity squad for this season and beyond. Sophomores Will Powell (30th) and Jack Chlopak (32nd) secured key spots for the Bears, and Ari “Mono-Shoe” Chadda (40th) rounded out Landon’s scoring effort. Fellow freshman speedsters Kevin Tsai and Peter King both finished with sub-20 times, helping to keep the pressure on their teammates.
The varsity B Bears were led by Senior Captain Matt Wellington (12th), who seemed unphased by the heat and earned another piece of hardware for his team. Landon placed seventh overall in the varsity B race, but rebounded with a third place finish in JV Third Race competition thanks to top-15 finishes by Junior Logan Giles (7th), Junior Captain Henry “Bassus Rex” Smith (9th), and freshman Harsh Singh (12th). Many other Landon runners shrugged off the sultry conditions and posted excellent times in both races.
In the Middle School race, Tre’ Simmons set the course record in 12:00.04 flat and Baxter Brew completed his first ever 3200 meters 18:05.41.
The Bears will dedicate the next fortnight exclusively to training; they return to action later this month first for a home meet on September 17, then at the Musselman Invitational, where they hope to reclaim first place honors on a wildly challenging West Virginia course. Thanks to all family members who came out to support the team and provided refreshments. Special thanks to the Gilbert family for organizing snacks for our small army and to Mr. Gagarin for fearlessly piloting a large bus across a narrow bridge.

Thanks Messrs. Drescher and Hunt for this GREAT report.
