SPRING SPORTS

Baseball (5-3)

By Steve Davidson

The Landon Bears baseball team concluded a great week at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports with a 2-1 record against top flight competition.  It was a week filled with great games, multiple high energy practices and great fun at Disney.  Hats off to Coaches Powers and Miller for a wonderful trip, enjoyed by students and parents.

The Bears’ starting pitching was excellent – starters Jed Rosenberg, Jake Davidson and Jack Cope all turned in quality starts.  Will O’Shea and Dane Camphausen paced the Bears with 5 hits each over the three games.  Matt Sciloi lead the team with 5 RBI.  Will Barufka had 4 hits, Kit Dziak had 3 and Davidson contributed two RBI.

In the first game, a 15-2 win over Orange High School of Cleveland,Rosenberg went the distance in a game shortened to five innings.  He retired the first 9 batters in order, and only allowed one hit with no walks.  He registered 5 strikeouts.  Sicoli had a double and triple to register his 5 RBI. O’Shea went 2 for 2 with 4 RBI.

In the second game, a 5-3 win over Westford Union High of Wisconsin, Davidson went six strong innings.  He allowed four hits, two earned runs and stuck out 8 over 6 innings.  Barufka came in to record a save, pitching a scoreless 7th.  Barufka also had 3 hits, while Dziak and Camphausen each had two.

In the final game of the trip, the Bears fell to the Haverford School of Pennsylvania, 6-1.  Haverford was a very strong squad, with several D I baseball commits.  Their pitching was especially strong, with hurlers all throwing in the high 80s.  The Bears were in it until the end, with Haverford scored a few late runs to put the game out of reach.  Haverford also made several outstanding fielding plays, thwarting Bears’ rallies. Cope started and pitched very well.  He went four innings and limited Haverford’s powerful lineup to two runs, while recording 6 strikeouts.  Jay Budin pitched the final two frames, allowing 2 earned runs, with 2 strikeouts.

The entire team made the trip and all benefitted from increased playing and practice time – catcher Jonathan Gerber, outfielder Chazz Harley, outfielder Mark Kalavritinos, infielder Sam Peraza, infielder Jack Poston, catcher Henry Prince, infielder George Roggie, outfielder Justin Sides and infielder John Wyatt all saw significant action.

IAC play starts Tuesday with a game at St Albans.  Home IAC opener Thursday at 4:30 also against St Albans.  Come out and support the Bears!

Golf on Spring Break

Coach Duquette tees off on the Judge 1st hole- signature hole of the RTJ Trail – Stripes his shot down the middle and said “PUT THAT ON TWITTER!” Buuuuuuuuust!!!

Lacrosse (4-3) two game winning streak against PA Inter Ac teams–Landon Lacrosse 6 Penn Charter 5 (O/T)—the overtime was thrilling to say the least and it was played at Georgetown U under the lights. Landon Lacrosse 8 Episcopal Academy 3—the Bears 1st game played outside the DMV in 10 years (right?) and the players executed well in all phases.
