Wrestling (1-0) beat Sidwell through a tremendous team effort as described by Coach Katz
The Bears started the season with a big win. With 6 experienced wrestlers and 7 freshmen in the starting line-up, we won 8 out of 14 matches. It was a team effort. In wrestling, a victory does not necessarily mean winning a match. It is all relative…..Sometimes it is a victory to step on the mat against an experienced wrestler, sometimes it is facing your fear of failure, sometimes it is not getting pinned, sometimes it is fighting off your back more than once. Tonight, our young Bears stepped up in all of these ways. The match started at 113 where Charlie Lynn (106) went up a weight to help the team fill the spot against a very experienced wrestler. He faced his fears and did his best for the team. At 120, Conrad Brady wrestled a tough kid. He never gave up and lost by a major decision. He saved the team 2 points for his effort. At 126, first year wrestler Nico Biabani fought hard and almost scored some points on an experienced wrestler. Things turned around when Senior Lorenzo Lopez started the momentum shift with a first period pin. The streak continued with Matt Amitay and Tyler Younge getting pins. Freshman Anthony Savoy lost a tough match to a strong competitor 6-3. Again, a freshman saving us another 3 points. Seniors Patrick Kielb (160), Marc Schermer (170), and Jerrold Johnson (182) faced the heart of their line-up (all seniors) and all came up with victories. First year freshman Will Abramson (195) hung tough into the 3rd period with an experienced Senior, and Freshman Gabe Johnson (220) also wrestled a Senior and found a way to save us points. Gabe fight off his back several times to lose by a major decision. With the match sealed with the saved points, Sidwell forfeited to Sachin Srikanth at 285 and John Bates at 106 to end the match.
We were able to get many young bears exhibition matches before and after the Varsity match. Georgetown Day school joined in the exhibitions. Our Bears went 4-4 against Sidwell. Bao Duong (106) earned a technical fall in his first ever match. Sophomore Daniel Robinson (D-Rob) earned a major decision for his first ever match. Nico Schermer and Thomas Eusse earned pins for their first high school wins. Against GDS, we did not fare as well because we were wrestling their varsity guys as well as their JV. The only one able to pull out a victory was Bao Duong. He went 2-0 for the night.
