Thanks to Coach Hunt for the results.

WRESTLING—Coach Katz’s mat men had another double weekend where we sent teams to two different competitions.  Varsity A participated in the Mad Mats Tournament hosted by Montgomery County Public High School, Magruder.  Varsity B went to the Mercersburg Dual Tournament in Pennsylvania.

At MAD MATS, Landon came out on top, the boys sealed the victory in the consolation finals when three of our four wrestlers won tough matches for 3rd place.  Joe Papalia 126, Theo Shockey 132, and Mike War all wrestled very tough opponents and came out on top.  Freshman Domingo Escudero 113 made it to the consolations finals but fell to a tough opponent to take 4th place.  As a back up to Will Levy, Louis McNamara 144 placed 6th.  We had two wrestlers not place in the top 6, but both won matches to contribute to the team victory: Ryan Zand 150 and Owen Kelly 165.At 175, Senior Nate Furgeson made it to the semi-finals, but he did not come back the second day because he was sick.  He defaulted to 6th place. We had five in the finals, and walked away with TWO CHAMPIONS.At 106, freshman DENNIS LEARY made his first finals in his career in high school. While he kept it close, he got pinned late in the 3rd period. Senior JAMES HANLEY pinned his opponent in 48 seconds.  He won the most pins in the least amount of time award, as he wrestled a total of 1 minute 56 seconds total in three matches.  At 157 Junior CONNOR KOEGEL made his first final, but unfortunately ran into a freshman buzz saw from Bullis. At 190, Junior DP POPE faced a tough adversary from Good Counsel. He was winning by 4 points with about 30 seconds left and got caught on his back and pinned.  To wrap things up, Junior TILLER SMITH kept his streak alive when he pinned his guy in the first period.  Tiller has now won this tournament 3 years in a row!

This victory was a team effort.  We had three starters out of the line-up and everyone stepped up and did what they needed to do to earn points.  Every wrestler contributed and every wrestler represented the school well.

From Case Anderson: Despite the challenges of fielding a team due to injuries, sickness, and other commitments, the boys who participated did a great job. Against Kiski, we were tied 36-36 heading into the final match with KEDREN SMITH coming up. He was 0-2 prior to it, but he stuck his guy with a (wait for it…) cross face cradle in 30 seconds. Landon W, 42-36.

Against Covenant Life, we were down 24-41 with three matches remaining. Coach Oberg and I recognized the potential if we somehow got 6 pts in each of the next three matches. At 150, HUTTON BANKS was down by 5 or so in the 2nd period, but turned his guy for the fall. Then they (I guess because of injury) unexpectedly forfeited at 165 and 175. Just like that, Landon W, 42-41.

Special recognition against CLS to Sam Curtis (who mauled his guy, WBF), Banks (WBF), and Leary (who was banged up and got beaten by technical fall by the guy who beat him in the finals at St. James…but he fought off his back the whole way to avoid the pin, and that one point made the difference). Recognition to Luke Yang pulling an upset against Kiski with the fall that gave Kedren the chance to win it for us.

3-1 on the day, each wrestler got their hand raised at least once (some by forfeit, but still a win). Despite the rough start, a good day overall!

Article in National HS Wrestling website (click on link for full story)

“’My goal was to put it all out there and finish my moves well,’ said Hanley, a returning Interstate Athletic Conference champion and runner-up at last year’s Maryland Independent Schools’ State Tournament. ‘That, along with being able to get in some significant amount of time out there on the mat.’

But Hanley was so efficient at the former that he failed to achieve the latter, pinning all three of his 120-pound quarterfinal, semifinal and championship bout rivals in less than a combined less than two minutes. In succession, Hanley registered falls in 30, 38 and 48 seconds, the latter being Magruder sophomore Sava Makarov.”

As this report is being posted, the Bears are at the prestigious 2023 Beast Of The East Wrestling

Second round win: French (DP) Pope (Landon School) 23-6 won by fall over Hunter Pearson (Skyline) 6-4 (Fall 3:28)

First round: James Hanley (Landon School) 35-6 won by fall over Braulio Lobo (Mountain View) 6-6 (Fall 1:23)

French (DP) Pope (Landon School) 22-6 won by fall over Carlton Crooms (New Kent) 0-3 (Fall 1:28)

Tiller Smith (Landon School) 36-11 received a bye () (Bye)

They are still battling and the format of these tournaments provide matches after losses.
