.Axel, Matt and Jonny still going in the consolations. Landon Bear season comes to an end. Lorenzo went the furthest as he lost in the blood round by a PA boy.

The IAC championship was a day filled with ups and downs. On paper, it was anybody’s game and the final results will come down to bonus points between Bullis and Landon. The lead changed back and forth the entire day, but the difference in each round was less than 2 points. Both teams had pins unexpectedly, decisions when they were expected to pin, underdog wins, and unexpected losses. Senior Patrick Townsend (120) was seeded 3rd and revenged an earlier loss to make the finals. Jerrold Johnson (170) also was seeded 3rd and made the finals with a big win in the semi-finals. Sophomore Dameon Ming (195), Junior Patrick Kielb (145) and Junior Marc Schermer (152) had a big pins in the consolation round to earn needed bonus points to keep us in the run. Sophomore Eric Cao had a battle at 220 in the consolation finals but gave up a takedown in the final seconds. Townsend, Matt Amitay (138), and Johnson all wrestled well in the finals but came in second. In the end, we had the most champions with 4. Axel Giron (126), Lorenzo Lopez (132), Jonny Gherman (160), and Jelani Machen (182) all repeated their IAC titles with dominant fashion. In the finals, Axel won by a major decision, Lorenzo and Jonny both pinned. Jelani (ranked #5 in MD) won a tough 7-3 decision over the #7 ranked wrestler in MD. The Bears represented our school well and left it all on the mat. I am proud of their effort and continue to expect great things in the post-season.

February Feb 7&8, and Feb 15&16,
At the Melee on the Metro, the team finished in 8th place out of 22 teams with only 9 wrestlers entered. Several starters were out with injury. We definitely could have used a few more point scorers. We were only 11 points away from being in the top 6. We did score 9.5 points higher than Bullis, even with our limited line-up. Wyoming Seminary won the tournament (they are ranked #3 in the Nation), even with some “second stringers” in their line-up. We had four finalist who lost close matches. Axel Giron lost to #7 ranked National prep wrestler from Germantown Academy (PA) 7-3. Lorenzo Lopez lost 4-0 to the #4 ranked National Prep wrestler from St. Christopher’s (VA). Jonny Gherman lost by pin to #3 ranked prep wrestler in VA. Jelani Machen 5-2 to a top wrestler from Wyoming Seminary (PA). We had two other place winners in Matt Amitay 5th place, and first year wrestler Miles Tonkel 4th place. Miles avenged a loss to IAC champion from Episcopal from the week before. Of note, Jonny Gherman earned his 100th victory.
At the Maryland Independent State tournament, the team placed 9th out of 30 teams. We again were short-handed. We had only 8 wrestlers competing and we were 25 points from being in the top 6. Of the 8 wrestling, #8 seed Patrick Kielb got injured in the first period of the first round. He managed to win that match with a come from behind pin, but could not continue in the tournament. Senior Patrick Townsend ended his career with a good performance. He was one takedown away from making the podium. In the end, we qualified 5 wrestlers for National Preps (the most qualifiers on record). It was one more than last year’s IAC champion team. Axel Giron (126) placed 4th, Lorenzo Lopez (132) placed 5th, Matt Amitay (138) place 6th, Jonny Gherman(160) place 4th, and Jelani Machen(170) placed 4th. This tournament is by far the toughest qualifying tournament. Team champion Mount Saint Josephs qualified all 14 wrestlers with 13/14 in semi-finals. They had 8 in the finals with 4 champions. Of note, Senior Jonny Gherman makes it to the podium after several years of losing in the blood round. Jelani Machen earned his 100th victory. He also becomes a 3x state place winner (6,4,4). Only 7 other Landon wrestlers have achieved this feat. Mike Petrash ’01 (4,5,2), Will Defrancis ’03 (5,4,3), Alex Young ’03 (6,6,5,5), Mike Kelly’08 (6,6,4) Trey Smith ’08 (6,7,4), Jarett Witzal ’15 (8,6,2), and Brendon Gallagher ’18 (5,4,2,2) Axel Giron’s career record continues to increase to 167 victories. He also earns his third state placement with one being in public school (2 PS, 3, 4). Congrats to the boys and we are hoping for some place winners at National Preps next week.
