Phase 2 of the season has begun…. After attending several competitive tournaments in the preseason, January is designed for duals and league competition.  The league changed its rule that you can wrestle more than 1 league match in a day so we had a quad planned with 3 IAC schools: Bullis, St. Stephens St. Agnes, and St Albans.  On Wednesday, St Albans communicated that due to injuries and sickness they are forfeiting the matches. So, we were 1-0 in the IAC without even wrestling.  Luckily, I was able to pick up Washington Latin to fill the spot.  In the first round we wrestled a solid Bullis.  They only had 7 wrestlers, but most of them are very good.  We did not wrestle well, and their wrestlers matched up with our less experienced wrestlers. The key win was the return of State Champion Will Levy.  He pinned his opponent in the third period to seal the match.  Final score: 48-32. For round 2, the Bears reset for their match with a much improved St. Stephens St. Agnes. The match started at 190 where DP Pope received a forfeit.  The match of the night was at 215. Junior Captain Tiller Smith defeated a returning Prep National place winner and state finalist in Privates in Virginia in 2023. He beat him twice.  At the end of the second period, Tiller was in a scramble and put his opponent on his back.  The ref called a pin, but it was loud enough in the gym, there was question whether the buzzer rang or not.  The ref was not sure and let the wrestlers continue. In the end, Tiller scored a takedown in the 3rd period for a 6-5 victory.  At 285, first year wrestler Bahesh Kurbanov had an exciting match as well.  He also scored a takedown in the third period for 13-12 win that went back and forth. These two victories got the ball rolling…. At 106 Dennis Leary won by technical fall, 113 Domingo Escudero, 120 James Hanley, 126 Joe Papalia, 132 Theo Shockey all won by pin.  At 138, Max Murray won a decisive 9-3 decision. Seniors 144 Will Levy, 165 Owen Kelly, and 175 Nate Furgeson ended the match with pins for a final score of 62-9. In the last round, Washington Latin only had 8 wrestlers.  We won 6 of the 8.  Tiller Smith, Dennis Leary, Joe Papalia, Theo Shockey, Will Levy, and Conner Koegel all won by fall.  The final score was 66-9.
