January 13, 2024
The Bears entered the most competitive dual event of the year called the Gilman Duals. This competition had 12 competitive teams from six states including PA, CT, DE, NJ, and VA. The Bears wrestled really well to win their pool division by beating The Hill School (PA) by a score of 51-27. The highlights were wins by JAMES HANLEY, CONNOR KOEGEL, & NATE FURGESON. JETT BUCHANAN lost a close match in Sudden Victory. Juniors DP POPE AND TILLER SMITH knocked off Prep Nationally ranked wrestlers. In our second match, we beat #13 ranked in MD Calvert Hall by the score 41-37. This match was quite exciting as most every match was close. Our freshmen light weights helped pull out the team victory when DENNIS LEARY (106) and DOMINGO ESCUDERO (113) started the action with first period pins. JAMES HANLEY and JOE PAPALIA kept the ball rolling with 2 pins as well…. Bears up 24-0. Calvert Hall bounced back with a couple of wins. WILL LEVY (144) put a stop to the momentum with a technical fall. Calvert Hall earned a couple more victories to hang in there until NATE FURGESON earned a pin against a tough wrestler. Again, Calvert Hall continued to challenge us with big wins against JETT BUCHANAN and DP POPE. DP (#14 in the state) lost 5-1 to #8 ranked wrestler in MD. The team score at 35-31 Landon with 2 matches left. #7 ranked TILLER SMITH sealed the match with a pin of #12 ranked wrestler.
By winning the pool, Landon moved to the top pool in the tournament. Unfortunately, we were out powered by #3 ranked Gilman and top ranked in Delaware St. Marks. In the semi-finals, we had victories against Gilman by HANLEY, PAPALIA, AND SMITH…. Gilman 58-15. In the consolation finals, we faired a little better, but lost to St. Marks 51-30. We had victories from DENNIS LEARY, JAMES HANLEY, WILL LEVY, DP POPE, AND TILLER SMITH.
At the end of the day, we placed 4th as a team out of 12 tough teams. Of note, James Hanley went 4-0 and gets closer to reaching the 100 win club (he stands at 88 victories with a COVID season missed). Tiller Smith also went 4-0 with wins over ranked wrestlers.
This week, we planned to travel to Alexandria, VA to seal at least half of the IAC title by facing our last opponent, Episcopal. We will also face St. James and WCAC foe Gonzaga. NEW DATE?
