December 12,2017
o
It was another exciting night on the mats. Tonight, both matches were decided on the last two matches. Both victories were a team effort. In the first match, it started at 132 lbs. Patrick Kielb struck first with a pin in 31 seconds. At 138, Matt Amitay dropped a close match 5-2, and Luc Schermer (145) lost 14-5 to a tough opponent. Brendon Gallagher did his thing at 152 with a pin to get us back on track. Jonny Gherman (160) lost another battle 7-4. Forfeits were exchanged at 182 and 285 for Ryken and Nick Haller (195) and Carter Johnson (220) received them for us. At 106, first year wrestler, Nate Zola scored his first takedown, but lost by a pin. Patrick Townsend got another forfeit at 113. The team score was Landon 36 and SMR 28 with two big matches left. At 120, Axel Giron wrestled a 3x state champion and was pinned. The score now was Landon 36 and SMR 34. The last match was between Lorenzo Lopez and ranked Junior. After a tough physical battle Lorenzo came out on top with a 3-1 decision for the team win! Final Score Landon 39 St Marys Ryken 34
In the second match against Bishop Ireton, the drama continued. Matt Amitay won a huge victory with a take down in overtime at 138. Luc Schermer continues to use his senior experience to win smart matches. He won a close one down to the wire at 7-6. Younger brother Marc Schermer stepped in to help the team and earned a decisive pin at 152. We bumped Brendon Gallagher up to 160 and he earned a technical fall 16-0. We bumped Jonny Gherman up to 170 to face their best wrestler. Unfortunately, it did not go his way. Jelani Machen bumped to 182 and got the job done with a pin in 0:57 seconds. Nick Haller received a forfeit at 195. We gave up forfeits at 220, 285, 106 and 132. At 113, Patrick Townsend continues to improve, but faced a tough opponent. Going into the 120 match, the score was Landon 28 Bishop Ireton 29. Axel Giron bounced back from his earlier loss and pinned his opponent to put us up by 5. Lorenzo Lopez sealed the deal with a 6-1 victory of a tough opponent. Final Score Landon 38 Bishop Ireton 36
At the JV level, we had a good night. We went 15-9 with 13 pins. These guys are getting better each week and this experience helped move forward even more. Go Bears! Here is a list of the results:
Jake Kowitz 3-0 with 2 pins
Christian Thomas 0-2
Matthew Fierro 3-0 with 3 pins
Nicholas Kopp 1-1
David Diaz 2-1 with 2 pins
Jerrold Johnson 3-0 with 3 pins
Eric Cao 0-3
Sachin Srikanth 0-2
Terrance Bridgers 2-0 with 2 pins
Marc Schermer 1-0 with 1 pin
Beast of the East
December 16,2017
It is totally understandable why they call this tournament the Beast of the East. There were almost 800 high quality wrestlers from 120 different schools. The number one team in the nation (Blair Academy) is leading the pack so far. We qualified three wrestlers: Axel Giron (120), Lorenzo Lopez (126), and Brendon Gallagher (152). It was a long day with weigh-ins starting at 6:15 am. Unfortunately, all three wrestlers lost close matches. Axel lost by 3, Lorenzo in overtime, and Brendon by 1. In the consolations, all three bounced back and won two matches each. In the third consolation round, all three lost tough matches again. It was a rough day, but in the end, our wrestlers got a little tougher. I am sure this experience will get them one step closer to their end of the year goals at States and Nationals. As the competition is still going, the team is sitting in 86 place out of 120.
Outside of the White Rocks, the Bears wrestling is getting noticed (The Sentential):
