Winter Sports—

  • Basketball won its opener 73-35 against Trinity Christian School (1-1) with Donnell Fryer’s 18 and Justin Patterson’s 16 points and 9 other Bears scoring. Next game WWHS on Tuesday at home. [Whitman returns most of its core after reaching the 4A state semifinals last season. Senior forward Max Oppenheim averaged 9.7 points and 7.0 rebounds while senior Hannes Kogelnik, a shooting specialist, hit 60 three-pointers. Senior Jack McClelland and junior Joey Squeri return to the back court and are joined by junior transfer Alex Sanson, a 5-11 point guard who led Gonzaga’s junior varsity team in scoring.]

It was a busy weekend for the Bears.  The team split up and attended two different tournaments and almost every healthy wrestler got a chance to prove themselves on the mat.

Six wrestlers attended the prestigious Ray Oliver tournament at the McDonogh school. The tournament attracted 20 public and private schools from Delaware, Virginia, Maryland, DC, and even as far away as Canada. Our boys represented well as we placed 11th over schools like Gonzaga, Herndon, DeMatha, and Centerville.

 Four of our six wrestlers placed in the top six, while every wrestler got at least one victory.

  • At 106 lbs, freshman Patrick Kielb placed 6th at his first big tournament in high school.  He wrestled well and started the tournament with a pin against arch-rival Georgetown Prep.

          At 120 lbs, Lorenzo Lopez continues to make some noise at the state level as he took 3

rd

in a very tough weight class.  His only loss this year is to the eventual champion of the tournament from Spalding who is ranked # 2 in the stateThe rest of the team traveled to St. James for the Holloway tournament.  The team took 10th out of 13 teams without 8 starters (6 at Ray Oliver and 2 injured). Many of our young Bears got some excellent experience on the mat.

Three Freshmen got their first high school victories at the Varsity level:

  • Matt Amitay (126) who went 3-2 for the day and was one round from placing,

  • Jack Bradley (152) went 2-2 for the day, and Jerrold Johnson(160) who went 1-2 for the day.

  • Luc Schermer (132) continues to do well and was one round away from placing in the top four.

  • Brett Gallagher (160) revenged a loss from last week and beat the #13 ranked wrestler from St. James for 3rd place.  By far the toughest weight at the tournament, Brett lost in the semi-finals to the #4 ranked wrestler from Bullis.

  • The top performance of the day was second year wrestler Carter Johnson (220).  He placed 2nd when he lost in overtime to a rival St. Stephen’s wrestler.

All and all, it was a good weekend for the Landon grapplers as they gain needed experience and confidence as we get closer to IAC competition state.  Lorenzo loss 5-0 which was by far the Spalding wrestler’s toughest match of the tournament.

  • Junior Captain Brendon Gallagher (145 lbs) placed 4th in a very tough weight class that contained at least one state champion.  Brendon is currently ranked #7 in the state.

  • At 285 lbs, sophomore Terrance Bridgers placed 3rd.  As a second year wrestler, he is getting better and better and will certainly be in contention for a top place in the state at the end of the season.

Paul Padalino (L14), LB, Kolby Williams(L14) DL, #12 Richmond Spiders (10-3) at North Dakota beat the #8 Fightin’ Hawks 27-24 in the 2nd round of the NCAA FCS. The UR team scored 13 points in the last quarter and the game winning FG at 0:00. The Spiders now head to next Saturday to take on the second-seeded Eastern Washington (11-1) Eagles. That’s two years in a row that Richmond has made it to the quarter-finals. The game will be Dec. 10 at 1 p.m. Pacific time at Roos Field in Cheney, Wash.
